I read online that some one got schizophrenia because they smoked weed and he died at age 50 sum and all throughout those years they said it was a tough experience for him and I smoked some weed When I was 17-18 and became schizophrenic when I was 19 My question is since it’s a similar situation Will I grow up to have a tough life I mean I just went back to high school and got my diploma recently and graduated I drive and looking for employment i just hope my life isn’t miserable or hard and I can still go out and purse a career
Sz will give you a tough life but most people on meds can do so much better these days.
Pot will help bring in the sz for most folk. Most people on meds don’t smoke it and that is cool. It doesn’t equate to length of life or anything like that. If you take the meds as prescribed you’ll do fine if you keep on things…
You don’t get sz from smoking weed. That is a misnomer. You get sz from a genetic trigger getting hit by life and such. Weed can bring it out quicker but it’s not a primary diagnostic…
The prevalence of sz in the general population is roughly 1%. Way more people smoke weed these days and still the prevalence is roughly 1%. It’s not a causal agent in the scheme of things for others.
Schizophrenia will make your life harder. You can still get some things out of life but schizophrenia is going to affect you somehow, some way. The good news is that it will get better. The years right after you get diagnosed are usually the worst. The beginning is usually the worst but most people improve over time. What you can accomplish depends on the individual. Drugs will sink you, it’s best to avoid them.
Thanks nick and do you think holding a job down is possible I’ve read about your park ranger and it’s amazing I’m joining forestry my self and it’s my 2nd year with schizophrenia and I can say I’ve turned my life around I stop drinking drugs going out with friends who influenced negatively and I just hope it does get better and my goal is to hold a career down
If You Don’t Mind Me Asking,
What is The Career You Are Seeking (???)… . …
I was a total dopehead prior to my DX. Have been clean from it since age of 23. No idea if it contributed to my SZ or not and really not worried over it. I’ve been working full-time and also doing volunteer work on top of it for two decades plus. I’m married, have an adult kid, have a good rep in my community and am regarded as successful by those who know me personally and professionally.
I think there’s plenty of hope for you.
He said forestry.
Dunno How I Missed That…,
What is Forestry?..,
Like a Guardian of The Forest (???)… . …
If there is any advice I could give kids these days it is “watch out for the drugs and alcohol”. I didn’t do that, and I wrecked my life. Find some career you like, and pursue that. They say that if you do what you love you never have to work a day in your life.
It’s possible. I credit three things to anything I’ve accomplished in my disease:
Lot’s of help
Lots of hard work
And lots of luck.
Stopping doing drugs is the smartest thing you did.
I got diagnosed at age 19 too. The following 2 1/2 years were spent in a group home and an 8 month long hospital stay. I suffered horribly in that entire time with not even a minute of relief from frightening, painful symptoms. During those days I had no friends, no money, no girlfriend, no school, no job, no sanity (Of course I had nothing in the hospital). When I got out of the hospital I was 22 and through a series of events I became employed a year later and stayed at that job for 4 years. Unfortunately, I had become addicted to crack when I was 25 or 26. I later got clean when I was 29 but I barely survived the addiction. During my addiction I lost jobs, all my possessions, I almost lost the trust of my family, I risked serious injury most of that time from the places I had to get my drugs, etc. This is why I warn people about drugs. You can avoid all that if you’re smart. Anyways, I’ve been almost steadily employed since I was 23; mostly part-time but I worked full time too at certain jobs.
So being employed is possible.
There’s no overnight cure for schizophrenia, recovery takes place over a period of months or years. But there’s ways around it and like I said, you can still get something out of life. Good luck.
Thank you very inspiring one question you said you were a “dope head” before your break out and it’s so hard because I see homeless and i always hear that they’re homeless cause of drug abuse no I didn’t do drugs but I had my depressed stages that led to smoking marijuana and really want to have a story like yours so thank you
Weed doesn’t cause SZ unless you abuse it or if you use it regularly and you have SZ genes. My friend’s friend abused weed and started thinking that the FBI are trying to kill him like by poisoning his food. He got better when he stopped though. I didn’t because my SZ is genetic, SZ is 80% genetic. I definitely get psychosis when I use weed regularly, my psychosis gets more violent too so I stopped, deleted and blocked those bad friends that were also using cocaine. I got bad friends since I was on Abilify which caused me addiction to anything including hookers and gambling, its a side effect. All this stopped when I switched to Latuda.
Also note that there is different types of weed, high THC are the worst for SZ. Low THC high CBD are actually good for SZ because CBD is a natural antipsychotic.
Smoking weed makes my life enjoyable. I love the feeling of being calm and relaxed. My mind opens up and peace man( with the voices).
Everybody reacts differently to weed and also it depends if SZ cause is genetic (Worsened by weed) or psychological like stress and trauma ( Weed improves stress, depression, PTSD and anxiety) Personally I get violent and psychotic when on weed, another guy I know gets paranoid. Another with social phobia feels better, less depressive and more social on weed.
Studies show mj is detrimental to those afflicted with sz. I have been an mj consumer one year before getting ill, about 20 years. Unfortunately, I am an addict, about 9% of those who use (mental illness or not) become addicted. I’ve heard that as much as 40% with sz have a substance abuse disorder. If i had it to do over again, mj would definitely not be in the picture.
google cbdpush and wordpress. it is my blog about sz and marijuana. Good luck.
