If I check myself into a mental hospital, do I bring my medications with me or will they give me them from the hospital? I’m on a beta blocker too aside from my mental meds.
In the US they give you your meds, you can’t keep the ones you bring from home.
Maybe it’s the same here in Canada.
I think it’s the same in Canada. The hospital normally has a full service pharmacy and they give you your meds. The only time I brought my own meds was when I was in crisis housing, but that wasn’t through a hospital.
If you go inpatient, I hope it goes well!
I would bring them just in case the don’t have access to some you need.
They can always lock them up for you and give them back when you leave.
@TheCanuk how’s your beta blocker working? Are you thinking you need the hospital?
They will give you the medications you need.
What’s going on? Why do you need the hospital? Are you okay?
I think it depends?. i bring my medicine just in case but ususally they dispense their own medicine. I bring my own inhaler bc i have asthma and they let me use it. I also brought my clozapine and they let me use it bc the hospital didn’t even have any
They usually call your pharmacy. They dispense meds from their internal pharmacy. It may be a good idea to take your meds, in case your pharmacy is closed.
Don’t worry
I’ve been to hospitals a lot, and often in a hurry. But I didn’t just show up and say, “Take me.” Usually there were a bunch of phone calls lighting the way.
After I learned the difference between the nice private hospital and the state hospitals, I always knew where I wanted to go if I had to go.
It is same in Canada. I was in Foothills for my 6 hospital stays.
I wish I had a choice as to what hospital I could go to! The only hospital here in town always makes me stay in the ER while they wait for a bed at the state hospital in Anchorage. It’s cuz I threatened a doctor back in December and she has a restraining order against me (I was off my meds at the time). Sometimes it means boarding in the ER for over 2 weeks. Sucks…
What the hell kind of ass hole doctor takes out a restraining order on an unmedicated schizophrenic?
I think she got pissed last July when I tried to hang myself off a door handle in her unit. It was the type of “sentinel event” that can cause serious legal probs for a hospital…ever since then she’s done everything in her power to not let me on her unit. I think it’s a form of disability discrimination but who’s going to buy my story over hers?
Well then the bi tch should’ve made sure someone was watching you. Like, there are several missteps here on their part that should’ve prevented something like that from happening.
I agree. I plan to talk to a lawyer with the disability law center to see if it is a form of discrimination and what I can do about it. Maybe nothing but maybe something, too. You’re right, tho, she is a bi tch!
Here in Spain we don’t bring our medications to hospital. They give us our meds there.
Think on this, how do they know if those are really “your meds” nope, they’ll provide them unless birth control which you can bring from home
…
By looking at the phone number of the pharmacy on the bottle and then calling to confirm the patient’s identity.
