I had no idea about this and wanted to bring it up in case anyone else was in the dark. I knew antipsychotic medications could make your mouth dry, but I had no idea that could make you higher risk for developing cavities! I just had to get a filling done and wish someone had told me this sooner, hence why I’m sharing this.
If you’re on antipsychotics and have access to dental work, bring up your prescription! You might be able to get ahold of a prescription toothpaste that can help keep this problem at bay. I was just started on Sodium Fluoride 5000 ppm toothpaste.

Yeah i had a dry mouth from benztropine. Really really dry. It felt like a cats tongue. Now i have almost every tooth filled. They gave me a prescription toothpaste but i never filled it.

When I was on 3 antipsychotics at the same time I was really thirsty so I drank 8 L of water every day and I guess that’s why I never had dental problems. After I came down on using 2 antipsychotics concurrently I only drink 5 Litres a day.
I drink probably 5 liters a day too
I have the opposite effect with clozapine…I drool all night and sometimes choke on the excess saliva. I use atropine drops under the tongue to dry me out but I still wake up to a soggy pillow. I haven’t had any tooth problems at my last check-up so I guess that’s good.
