I hear they had a hard time coming up with a title for this song. They wrote the whole song and left the title for last. Their first choice was ā€œMichigan Girlsā€ but then vetoed it. Next they tried ā€œRhode Island Girlsā€, South Dakota Girls" and ā€œNevada Girlsā€. but they just didnā€™t have a ring to it. As a last resort they tentatively came up with ā€œCalifornia Girlsā€ and it seemed to flow so it stuck but they always say in interviews that theyā€™ve always hated that name.
