To me being disabled does not mean you are not capable. It just means you need some extra help in life, some more than others, and that’s okay.

I am still disabled and I am working. It beats staring at the walls all day.

Not all disabled people are on disability. They might just have some kind of health setback. My friend has schizophrenia but she goes to work every day and goes to school. In fact almost everyone who attends schizophrenia support group does some activity like work, clubhouse, or volunteer. Makes me feel we can all achieve at least that much.

To me a disabled person is incapable of completely working.

A disabled person just needs some special assistance to be able to function the same as anyone else. Then again there are some who are so disabled that sadly even with all the resources in the world, they will never function at the same level as a regular person. It just depends on the individual I guess.

I don’t like the term disabled. I prefer the term “differently abled” which implies at least a capacity to function on some level. But I do agree that it depends on the individual. I like to think of Stephen Hawking and what he was able to do despite the limitations of his physical abilities.

Depends on the disability. Some disabilities need minor adjustments to the typical way of doing something, other disabilities are so disabling work is off the table.

I think both of those definitions have their plus and minus points . I’ve never worked. A lot of that is down to a failure by health professionals to see the full range of problems I had , and provide the necessary help and support. Good treatment increases the chances of a person with a disability working.

In the late 70s I was earmarked to go an industrial rehabilitation centre to see what I could do. My pdoc said I wasn’t well enough , and the offer was never repeated. Around this time it became cynical ,government policy to park some people on disability benefit to massage the unemployment figures.

Then in the late 90s there developed a mindset of a drive to achieve full employment. The disabled were no longer seen as unemployable. If done right that could have been a good thing. However there was little intelligent, quality control over who might be capable, and what help was needed to achieve that.

We now have a situation where government policy has shaped public opinion so that many non-mentally ill people see the genuinely disabled as scroungers , and hate crimes against the disabled have rocketed .

Ideally we should have a system that helps those that can work into work , while properly supporting those that can’t . We have neither. The disabled have become the main targets for income cuts because an austerity drive was seen to be needed.

The bankers responsible for causing that economic crisis have largely got off scot free.

It’s not that I cant work, it’s just a fear of not having a safety net to fall back on.

That and having to deal with people who are above you.

I agree. I think I could work, too, but if I’m in a job and not getting disability income then a single trip to the hospital could realistically make me homeless if I lose that job. That’s why I prefer volunteering and going to a day program. At least then I still have a place to live and food to eat if I spend a few weeks in the hospital during a relapse.

instead of disability maybe we should say serious issues or difficulties

I am at work and I have no work to do. Surfing the forum. Won’t have anything to do tomorrow either. All caught up.

I don’t have a problem with authority but they have a problem with me.

They will be rude to me because I “look like I’m rude”. But then I’ll be Uber polite back because that’s the way I am and they’ll get pissed because I’m not what they expected. An egotistical punk. I’m like the complete opposite. And it throws them off and creates conflict.

That’s what I think at least

Also most places don’t hire aliens. And I’m not talking illegal aliens… :alien: :space_invader:

God don’t want me to work.

I’m disabled in both mental and physical aspect. Without medical intervention, I might not be able to thrive. However, with medical attention, I’m studying, working, volunteering, etc.
