I have a BFA, which is useless.
Except for the two art grants I got this year. But the project is kind of dead in the water after I relapsed this last winter. Now I am just existing until its gone.

I am an outlier.

Didnā€™t graduate from high school with any qualifications

Went back to college to do an Access to Higher Education course - which is a year long part time course, with the aim of getting you to get into University without prior qualifications.

Then I studied at what was at the time the 18th best University in the UK, and graduated with decent grades, despite completing it during a significant psychotic episode.

When I applied for the college course, I had no idea that it was prepping me for University. I just looked at the subject matter and decided (I was self-employed) that my time wasnā€™t fully utilised and I would test myself

That then led to getting accepted at this university, which was a shock - and from that I decided to get as far as I could.

What prevented me getting a Masters and beyond was SZā€¦

Now I will not go back to education, as that chapter passed a decade ago, and I have a graduation photo and a certificate on my wall that proved all those teachers who said I was ruining my life wrong.

I just wish I was able to let those kids know whoā€™re in a position that I was once in, that failing at high school doesnā€™t mean the rest of your life will be a failure.

My niece is doing her exams right now, and the pressure these kids are put under is abuse as far as I am concerned.

Sheā€™s 16 for christs sake, and she has the system trying to leverage her choices ā€˜for lifeā€™ at that age?

Completely nuts.

I actually found University an incredibly enlightening experience compared to school

Itā€™s like hereā€™s some topics, pick one you like and hereā€™s access to 750,000 physical books and millions of online journals.

Nothing like school at all, and I was able to keep engagement even in ill health, as there was a real purpose to it

A significant factor, aside from the bullying,in my developing a SMI was the intense and relentless anxiety of not wanting to disappoint my parents and yet being acutely aware that I lacked the non academic/independent living skills to cope with going to university. Nowadays though the system could be better, itā€™s better equipped to help and support a 2020s version of me.A combination of there being no such support in the mid 1970s, and it taking till I was 60 for it to be acknowledged I had such difficulties, meant that, combined with fear of bullying, further education was not a realistic option.

Sometimes I feel worthless because of it. I wonder how many of my generation were in the same boat and, like me, never had the necessary help and support.

I have a lot of education but was healthy for most of it. I have a bachelors degree, an MBA and I completed the navyā€™s flight school and am a school trained aviation safety officer.

While schizophrenic I have gotten an associate degree in aviation maintenance technology and got my aircraft mechanics license. Thatā€™s about it.

As soon as I could, age 15, I took the California High School Proficiency Exam and passed it. As soon as I could, age 15 1/2, I left High School. I went to nursing school to become a LVN and did very well on the course work but dropped out when it came time for clinic due to anxiety.

A few years later I joined the Job Corps in Nevada. They didnā€™t recognize my California High School Proficiency Certificate and required me to finish High School before I could pick a vocation to train in. Meanwhile, they also scheduled me to take the GED test to see where I stood and where I needed improvement.

My High School transcripts arrived and I only needed two classes to graduate, World History and U.S. Government. The High School teacher gave me the final exam to see where I stood and where to start me and to his surprise I aced the tests. He passed me on the classes and awarded me my diploma.

A few days later the results from the GED came back and not only did I pass it, but I had extremely high scores.

The next time the center held their graduation ceremony I was one of the kids up on stage. They were giving out awards for high scores and also giving out the diplomas, calling the kids out one by one, they called me up 6 times. I was so embarrassed.

But anyway, thatā€™s how I graduated 3 times.
