Poem: Champion of Freedom

A spider skims over pond water
to build a bubble trap for minnows or something bigger;
the spider walks on water,
he fishes with his bubble net for a big fish,
but he won’t find tuna in a pond,
let alone a plankton-gulping whale shark.

The spider’s avarice is larger than either himself or his net–
he watches out warily, circumspectly, for the skilled archer fish
whenever he climbs, acrophobically, out
of the pond and onto a reed
in order to find where the fishing is good.

If archer and fisher spy each other
simultaneously,
the fish will defeat the spider
because the spider’s method is much slower,
however daedal his work may be;
the archer fish need only aim and spit,
and the fishing spider would be food for the fish
in a speedy moment, awkward for the spider,
skillful and quick for the fish,
finished in a flash.

Bullfrogs and other pond denizens,
all of them submerged freedom fighters,
would splash and croak a victory cheer,
a joyful exultation for their beloved champion,
the brass-finned archer fish,
who nonchalantly belches.

You could try reading poems in Nepalese. I am sure there are many good originals or translations.

That was very good. On one hand you present an almost bucolic nature scene. Yet at the same time you show a deeper meaning and the struggle between two creatures, the struggle that is always going on behind all the pretty landscapes we see. I think this is great.

It’s a microcosm, I think, of good and evil battles fought at the level of humanity, too. I won’t get religious, tho. I wish I could here, but if we do it has to be by PM. Thanks for the compliments :slight_smile:
