Phone Question

So my daughters want me to get a phone.

I want nothing…no bells and whistles…just texting capabilities. Can I get this with some company for like 20 bucks a month? I don’t want to pay much more for just texting.

You should be able to recycle an old phone and just put a basic sim card in for texts/calls and even do pre paid. You just need to think about what you’ll need and shop around for a plan to suit. You don’t need the latest and greatest but honestly having a smart phone is easier to use and much more versatile.

@Patrick . I’m sure your girls will help you out as they will know the tech growing up with it and disclaimer…not sure how your phone companies work over there or even if pre paid is an option! My previous advice could be lost in translation…thought I better clarify.

Suggestion… SMS texting is either so much per message or you need an expensive plan that covers unlimited texting. Get the free Viber app. Have your kids also get Viber. You get free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone calls between Viber users no matter where they are in the world and also free texting. All unlimited. It will save you a bundle. You can also do this on your home’s WiFi or public WiFi to save on data.

Edit:

Most of our mobile companies enjoy ogliopoly status where prices have been fixed much higher than elsewhere in the world. We’re told it “fosters innovation” despite our having crappier service than in the U.S. where they pay less. I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a $20/mth plan. Not a usable one anyhow.

I only pay £8 a month and that gives me unlimited texts and calls with 12gb of data sim only

You can get a device fairly cheap if you don’t want it for much

I pay $50 CAD/month for unlimited texts, nationwide free calls, and 25GB of data.

Smartphones can be very useful for some things, for example I hook mine up to my minivan and have Google maps, Spotify, WhatsApp, etc… all voice controlled through the entertainment/navigation unit I installed in my van.

You don’t need to learn everything about them, but they can be very handy for certain things you enjoy.

You can go to Walmart and and get a straight talk plan… unlimited text and talk… phones are usually very reasonable too

I am admittedly hooked on both Google Maps on my infotainment system and also the ability to stream Net music stations.
