Owning a business with mental illness

Owning a service business \ gig is not as hard as it sounds. They say on google that 25% of schizophrenics have a job and up to 90% want to work. They also say they can own a lawn care business. I own a lawn maintenance and small hauling gig . I have schizoaffective disorder and ptsd. I’m very thankful that I can work as I’ve seen plenty of poor people with this illness that don’t work or do drugs. If you mowed 10 lawns in a day that would be 600$ a day so you can make a lot of money with this job but not many people go above 20-40 lawns per week. I usually mow about 5-10 yards a week. And you can keep ssdi and make up to 50k a year but with ssi you can’t make more then 1800$ a month. Anyway nice to meet you guys any other business owners or what jobs do you guys hold ?

Nice how do you get your clients? That part can be challenging for someone with mental illness.

In the past I have owned:

  • Photography studio
  • PC repair business
  • DJ business

I’m working as an insurance broker and am financially comfortable these days so I don’t have a need for a side-hustle other than for fun. I would still be DJing, but covid came along and wrecked that for me. I have to avoid crowds now.

My goal is to publish photography videos on YouTube next year for some passive income (coffee money, LOL) but nothing hardcore.

I threw mulch one summer in college for a landscaping company. Easily the worst job I’ve ever had.

The mowing crew looked like they enjoyed it, though!

This is incorrect. The SSDI monthly maximum is $1,550, not $50K per year.

There is active income (income earned from something you do that takes up time), and there is passive income (money earned from sources that don’t require active work or involvement to generate).

I earn passive income (a high-yield savings account, and a Vanguard 500 index fund). However, since you are the one mowing the lawns (active income), you’re subject to the SSDI monthly maximum active income. Thus if you earn $60 for mowing a lawn, you can only mow 25 lawns per month (about 6 lawns per week) to stay under the monthly maximum active income and keep your SSDI benefits.

That said, it’s encouraging to hear that a person with schizoaffective disorder is gainfully earning money.

I want to start an electrician company in a few years. I have all degrees needed and the apprenticeship. As I have trouble with people due to schizophrenia I’ll do it with my brother who ist a plumber.

That’s with ssi there’s a difference between ssi and ssdi

The maximum earned monthly income for SSDI is $1,550:

[During the trial work period, there are no limits on your earnings. During the 36-month extended period of eligibility, you usually can make no more than $1,550 ($2,590 if you are blind) a month in 2024 or your benefits will stop. These amounts are known as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).]–SSA

That’s ssi your talking about I’ve read it all before ssdi is different

I think @Catman is correct. If you went through all the trial work periods and you’re still working then the $1550 a month limit sounds about right, $50,000 a year does not sound right . I’ve been getting SSDI for more than 20 years and I went through all the work trial periods. About ten years ago the max I could earn at my job was about $1100 a month. It makes sense that ten years later the limit has risen to &1550. $50,000 a year would be about $4000 a month and that doesn’t sound even remotely correct. And I’m not mixing up SSI with SSDI.

You are correct the most you can make working every month is $1550 on SSDI. That’s $18600 a year. I would be very careful working on SSDI if SSDI is your lifeline.

I stand corrected I just read it. However for self employment you can still make 1550$ in profit so you can mow more lawns since you have expenses
