So my partner has been trying to encourage me to set up my own business. Essentially this business will just be selling rare and collectable plants online. I’d need to set up a greenhouse and would have to move quite a bit of stock to make it worthwhile. My big challenge is I have basically no motivation and can only seem to work for an hour at a time before getting exhausted. My mum is happy to help me, but I’m slightly concerned because I suffer from severe cognitive impairment which means managing the accounts etc. would be a big challenge.
I have the money to invest in a business, but is it worth the risk?! I haven’t worked in over a year so there’s that too… maybe I should just accept that it’s too hard and move on to a life of not achieving much. Sigh
All the best !!!
As you have support go for it.
Are you planning to sell it through amazon ? As I tried for my pervious company but did not proceed as we had no space to store all the things in one place.
Thank you! No, I’m not going to sell through Amazon. My partner works in advertising as a producer so he will help me set up a website shopify account and social media. We will see if I can gather up enough energy to go for it. I am very lucky to have help and support.
Every good business starts with a good business plan. Just a thought but, maybe you could test your motivation and work on a really thorough well done business plan.
:: caveat, havn’t ever run a small business or any business.
Thanks so much @Schztuna ! I’m letting the idea percolate for a while longer. My partner wants me to work on small planning tasks to begin with and do some more research on suppliers etc. so maybe I should try making those small steps before making a big financial investment.
Yeah, I’ve read (somewhere) that you can really spend a lot of time on a business plan. This is the U.S. small business administration’s website, maybe it will help:
IDK. It’s good you have the desire and ambition to start your own business. Just don’t set yourself up for failure. I’m not saying to not do it but running a small business often takes long hours and a big investment in time. I’ve never run a small business and I don’t know what the demand is for rare plants but have you really looked into this? Maybe before jumping in, you should look into the rare plant market in your area and look at similar businesses in your general area. Are other rare plant businesses doing OK? It’s something you might want to check out.
I hate to be negative but do you live in an area where rare and collectible plants are in big demand ore something? Who are your target customers? There’s a lot to consider. Have you looked into shipping costs? Packaging costs? Seems like shipping live plants would be expensive.
I mean you know yourself better than me so maybe you’re capable of it. But I always hear those horror stories of small business owners putting in 60 hour weeks and barely keeping their business afloat. Everything in life is a risk and you don’t succeed without certain risks but I would really research with your partner what you would be getting into.
