NHS - was prescribed pregabalin for GAD but got given branded Lyrica by the pharmacy. Unusual

Usually on the NHS you always get a generic.

There is no generic available for Lyrica (I work in a pharmacy).

Do you work in the uk? Just cause I was sure pregabalin had gone generic for epilepsy and anxiety in the uk.

Oh ok, I don’t know about the UK, my fault. I’m in the US. Here it takes at least 7 years for a med to go generic. I say “at least” because, somehow, Viagra is still brand-only here despite being on the market for around 20 years. Here Lyrica is typically used for nerve pain, similar to gabapentin (Neurontin).

Not quite sure what the deal is here in the uk. I think pregabalin has gone generic for epilepsy and anxiety but is still in patent for neuropathic pain. Must get complicated for the pharmacies.

Yeah, that is weird that it would be generic for some things and brand for others.

I’m glad you got the pregablin. How is it working?
