going to replace my mess of a garden with a berry patch. im thinking 20 to 25 berry bushes where the garden is. i also am going to grow cherry trees, about 5 of those. it will be in the sideyard instead of the front, they should get enough sun, and iim going to buy a rain gauge to put out there so i know when i need to water them and can track how much rain we get a week.
i will use the berries in my morning smoothie, but i don’t think i will yield enough for a year’s supply of smoothies.
also im planning on turning my spare bedroom into a grow room for romaine lettuce, spinach and sprouts or microgreens. maybe some herbs too like catnip and thyme. gonna grow indoors with no weeds haha.
it is 50% paid off, i still owe another 30 thousand before it is mine officially, it is rent to own agreement. right now dad is the official owner but shortly in about 5 years it will be mine. maybe sooner. i plan on going back to work and fixing it up how i like, although it is in good shape now mostly. i’ve been paying him for 5 years now, 6 thousand dollars a year, i will have much more money available to me once i get the place paid off. dad said it will cost me about $234 dolars a month to live here. it has about an acre and a half of yard, and another acre and a half by the creek behind the house, if i want to fish, but i dont fish.
no, im essentially paying the places mortgage with my rent money. once i’ve paid the agreed on price i will no longer have to pay rent, the title will be transferred to me, and i will just have to pay bills and utilities and taxes.
dad invests my rent money, and he made about 12k already off of it, that he used to finish his new bedrooms in the upstairs of his house. i am allowed to own 1 house and 1 car and stay on medicaid. which is state health insurance if you only make a limited income or have a disability. it’s cheap house but nice enough for me. the neighbors houses are worth 5 times what mine is worth haha. i have the cheapest house of all the neighbors haha.
Growing stuff is really fun, i use to hate garden work but now i am seeing it as a challenge and i want to reap the benefits i am hoping to encourage frogs and hedgehogs into my garden and bees, there are loads of bees atm thank goodness (Gods little helpers) haha they help nature a great deal, the frogs and hedgehogs should keep pests away from vegetation,
Your house sounds very cool esp if you have a river on your land, i have a river across the road but not in my garden i wish we had a little stream running through to the river but no.
thanks @Twialine im free to fix up the yard how i like right now, but have to wait until i own the house to do any home improvements. im planning on remodeling my kitchen, spare bathroom, screening in my back porch, blacktopping the driveway, and also fixing up my library, everything else is in good shape as is.
i want to blacktop the driveway, so i can put a basketball hoop on my barn and shoot hoops when i get bored. right now it is gravel driveway. it’s not a long drive, about 60 to 80 feet.
Repairs/maintenance for my home I put at $300. And I do a lot of the work myself. How much are your property taxes? I feel like we’ve already discussed this, but I can’t remember.
property taxes are $800/yr. it may be more expensive than $234/mo to live here, not sure actually, my biggest cost is winter heating bill. need to find something more efficient than natural gas i think. in the spring summer and fall it is cheap to live here.
the only thing in my freezer will be frozen berries, frozen lima beans, and frozen peas.
everything else i eat canned like fish and beans. i only eat fish after being failed vegetarian. i still get 155 grams of protein in my diet with cheese, seeds, beans, grains, peas, fish, and whey protein powder in my smoothie
