Need a change of attitude

I’ve been taking my job for granted. I come in an hour late or take paid days off and I’m not doing the best job I can do. I take the easiest path when it comes to getting work done. And the bosses have been putting up with it for awhile. I’m starting to realize how lucky I am to have a job, with these hours. I’m doing OK with money with this job and tbh no other job would let me work this slow, at my current pace.

And it pays well and the work isn’t hard. I think one thing I could do to improve is stop taking so many breaks, I sit down wherever I am for 5 minutes at a time about 5 times a day. Yeah, I gotta try harder, I don’t know how I would survive without this job.

Don’t you have scheduled breaks? Taking breaks when you want to sounds a bit odd.

They tell us to sit down if we feel tired or hot.

Your job is not mentally stimulating. It is physically demanding. I can see why you’d be burned out after all these years. But you still go to work and get the work done even if you don’t always give it your all. That speaks well of you and your work ethic. Be easier on yourself. You have enough people in your life putting yourself down.

Thanks @sweetpotatopie. That’s a good way to look at it.

I don’t know about where you live nick but we have a janitor at my day program. He got his job through aarp. They find jobs for people who are older. His job is cushy as hell. He works four hours a day keeping our program building clean. Idk if they have that where you are but if this job or future jobs get to demanding at your age you could look into it.

Thanks. I only work 3 days a week for 4 hours a day. It’s pretty cushy too I guess.

Right on. Maybe it is time to tighten up a bit. If you feel you need to. My mom wrote a paper in college about certain jobs and ways to get mentally ill people to work. It was my idea. One thought I had was breaking up some less demanding full time jobs and hiring disabled people. Like two people would cover a shift 4 hours each. Or save the 1-3 day jobs for the mentally ill. We already have benefits if we’re on social security. You could also find jobs that would work with a persons specific problems like social anxiety. Idk. If someone put in the effort I could see ways that disabled people could work real jobs and get some extra cash and self esteem. They could keep all their disability in a program as well as the money earned. It sucks that ssi checks get cut when someone makes some money. Kinda long winded answer but I think it’s a good idea that would help people out.

Those are some good ideas. In California, we already have the Department of Rehabilitation that gets jobs for disabled people. And we have employment agencies who not only get jobs for the disabled but some of them get jobs specifically for the mentally ill. My company that hired me is a private company who gets jobs for the mentally ill and veterans.

That’s awesome. Maybe sometime in the future I could look more into it here in Arkansas. I’m now on social security retirement so my check won’t get garnished from what I understand like it would’ve had I been kept on ssi.
