My son might be schizophrenic?

A few months ago my son was doing great. He excelled at his job, was going to school full time and then one night it all changed. I received a call from my parents saying he had lost it. He was put in the hospital and remained there for several weeks. He was different when I visited him. Doctors there said they thought he might have schizophrenia. What??? What??? He was released but decided he could not take the meds he was given. I could not force him to take them. He ran off to California where I helped get him a job but the feedback I received was that he was almost special needs. It did not make sense? He failed, I think, I don’t know the real story and went back to New Mexico where he is staying with my parents. They say he is doing okay but he refuses to take medication. I saw him on face time and he did not look like himself. He seemed to be hiding inside his own skin. Like he knows he is not right but refusing to admit it to himself. He can’t concentrate and even minimal tasks seem to be difficult for him. He forgets everything. I am helpless, we are scared. I live in Texas. I am lost and feel tremendous guilt. Not sure who reads these, but I had to say something somewhere. Thanks

How old is your son?

Im sorry for your problem with your son. Try and convince him to take meds. He will never get better if he doesn’t take meds.

@csundt
you might get better responses at the family forum

Believe me, I have been trying to talk to him and be as supportive as possible but he refuses to take meds or go see a doctor. He turned 20 in November, he was perfectly fine when he came home for Christmas. February all of this started.

I wouldn’t worry too much about your son…as regards meds, it takes time and trial and error. SO don’t get on his back if he feels the meds are not working. It can be frustrating. Just be patient and supportive. This helps the patient a lot (supportive). The last thing a patient needs is for their parents to be non supportive.

I hope things improve for your son. Im sure they will.

Well that’s around the time schizophrenia typically comes around. But the good news, the prognosis is higher in individuals who have a sudden onset rather than a slow one. He just needs meds.

Took me a year to find out about latuda almost no side effects. Try that one

I wish I had some great advice, but I don’t. Hopefully he will start taking his medications; that’s important. I’m so sorry you are going through this.

Is Latuda a type of prescription?

Latuda has low to no weight gain, no tremors, no heart problems, helps clear up negative symptoms. I wouldnt take my meds when i knew they caused male breast growth but latuda doesnt cause that

He said his other meds made him feel like a zombie. How do you feel on Latuda? What are some of the side affects you have had?

All the meds make you feel like a zombie at first. It took about 3 months for my meds to completely work and the whole time i was paranoid about the meds. The first two months you sleep all day long and feel like a zombie. Nowadays the meds feel like normal… Some side effects i had was losing my labido, sleeping all day long, restless legs, flat affect which is basically feeling emotionally barren ( more the illness than a side effects.)

cactustomato, that is very helpful and reassuring. Thanks so much for being honest. This will certainly help!

No problem. The latuda causes some of the lowest weight gain. I was on risperdal at first and it made me gain 90lbs. Now im on a low dose of latuda since i got so much better. If your looking for a healthy med get medicaid or some other insurance and try latuda
