iāve been an ableton user since like 2015 so the bias is Kinda Real, hahah
My first experience using a DAW was Reason 3. Then I didnāt have a computer for years. Then I got a MacBook back when they were made of plastic. Thatās when I got into logic. It was similar to reason enough that I could use it. Then more years with no computer, just iPads. Now that Logic Pro is on the iPad Iām getting to use a DAW again. Itās like starting from scratch again. But in a fun way. Are there any iPad logic users here? Any opinions?
@Schztuna
This is a FL studio user doing magic
I wanted to show you this one cuz (appart from giving FL some love as well ) I had a project (the one with strings, you remember?
). I was going to overcomplicate things, but decided to keep it simple (just sample and drums). No multiple layers of keys, no bass line, no backing vocals. Everything is already in the great recordings of the past.
You asked about Splice before, I donāt know that much about itās functions. I just know that you donāt need to look too long to find a pretty decent snare/kick/hat. Nothing must-have but rather convenient to have. Solves a lot of problems imho. Itās subscription based.
About the workflow I would suggest you to be very structured from the start (I wasnāt lol):
Something like:
-create a chill beat and put the repeat function on (1 bar - not sure how familiar are you with the concept of ābarā. Kinda difficult to explain but will do if you need it)
-Once itās grooving, look at the big picture and, for example, use pen and paper to write down a simple song structure
-once you have the sections written down, do āsomething bigā to transition between sections
-This is 4 or 8 repetitions music, period. It needs something interesting to happen every 4/8 repetitions
-once the cake is ready, time to put the cherry on top. A lot of producers just flow between composing/mixing and mastering. I would suggest to focus on each of them separately. Thereās a world to learn for each of these topics, and can be very overwhelming at start.
@dreamer54: Haha wowww, he really just did that
Yes, I defos remember the strings project
-- that is something important, how to edit oneās work and what to add and leave out. I think that in itself is a great skill to have for sure
.
Ah, okay, good to know . Will see what is offered in each DAW as far as instruments go and take it from there
.
This is all super helpful to know methodologies and things .
Think a bar is like 16 somethings, right? Haha , I have no clue about traditional music structure, patterns, and how to make things make sense sonically
. This will be part of the learning curve for me, along with just getting the hang of the DAW tbh.
Defos like your idea about taking some paper and a pen to the track-- I could see how writing it down is helpful, especially for very visual/hands on peeps .
Okay, will remember the 4/8 rule once I see everything laid out .
Okay sounds good . It makes a lot of sense what youāre saying, as I could see how jumping around could convolute things a little bit. Probs is simpler to lay everything down, then start tweaking more in detail during a first go at things.
I am remembering the point you made a bit ago about keeping the amount of youtube tutorials in mind for each DAW/style of music, so that also helps a ton knowing there are references available out there as well for when I finally pick one .
Thanks!
part of a trance song iām doing for the album. REALLY happy with the turnout here so far!!!
Latest Tune i did on udio, its a bit sad but i think its ok.
@Schztuna itās not even neccesarily a bar, sorry I just confused things. Just thing about a single unit (for example kick, snare, kick, snare) in time, that if looped it grooves and makes sense by itself.
Especially if you want some human element in your drums (some swing lol), you may want to play the groove with your fingers, so it sounds more human.
About the default drum sounds, you may need to go really in depth to create heavy, punchy, cut through the mix sounds. With splice, people do it for you. You buy pretty good sounds already. So it becomes only a matter of taste. @zytroxide may explain you better about sound design, but itās pretty complicated stuff for me.
Yass ā ā ā ā ā lmao
Super hype tune!!!
Pretty awesome! Are you singing?
Gotcha, that makes sense
Defos sounds good . Like Dillaās drums and how they always sound very organic
-- Iāve been watching some hip hop producers work (I dunno if you remember those Rhythm Roulette vids from youtube I posted forever ago lol), and it is pretty split on the drums and how to start the track: some start with the sample chop, and others start with the drums-- it might just be down to their own personal preference. The drums actually have a lot of layers to them in terms of individual elements (something Iāve always just taken for granted haha), so trying to piece everything together drums-wise will defos be an interesting learning experience. Either way, imma try to mess around with the drum pads and see what happens
Interesting to know, thanks . Will keep Splice in mind
Downloading FL atm, so gonna check out what they have to offer as well
. Sound design seems wild!
@Schztuna if youre starting out and need a synth (the stock synths in most daws are meh) id recommend vital. Its pretty much the leading free synth. Serum is very arguably the best/most popular synth in the world and vital is basically the free version of serum.
Also if you want to use a paid synth id recommend doing a rent-to-own subscription (~$10/month) on splice for one of them. Alternatively the second best/most popular synth imo (especially considering the free addons that come with it) is phaseplant by kiloheartz.
In any case whatever synth you go with, whether it be serum, vital, omnisphere, massive etc, id recommend you get the kiloheartz free plugin bundle. Its a 1 time dl of basically all the basic effects you need to produce (reverb, delay, chorus, phasers etc and much more). They come in a nice free little pack that makes producing in fl handy as the stock ones arenāt up to par.
I also have a free preset pack for vital of all the presets ive made in the last year or so available. lemme know if your interested in any of these and i can share the links for them. There are also plenty of free presets for vital and serum etc on youtube for your particular genre. lemme know
Nice! Have surprisingly heard of serum before, so itās good to know theyāve got a similar thing in Vital but free haha.
Okay defos. Thatās cool you can rent to own, instead of them just charging you forever haha. . Both @daydreamer and @dreamer54 mentioned Splice as well, so it must be a pretty popular program/plug-in
. Will have a look around for sure
Oh cool, this is great to know . I will defos keep the kiloheartz bundle in mind! Tbh, Iāve never really done too, too much with like reverb and effects and things, so it will be neat to see all the effects and stuff they have and try them out
.
Hey thanks @POET, that is awesome! Will defos let you know about that preset pack once I get my bearings around FL! (Just downloaded it earlier today and took a quick peek and was like
, haha.) Donāt have much time to click around today, but am hoping to explore more of FL in the days/weeks to come. Thanks again!
No, its an AI singer lol, the lyrics are mine & i shape the song but AI does a lot.
I do remember. I donāt remember which one was your fave tho
About the drumpads I would experiment if you feel the actual piano keys more responsive than the pads.
Definetely I would google at least for a good lo-fi or boombap free drums library. I believe the default sounds need a little bit of āsound designā
I would say that working only with FL no external programs is very much rocket science no kidding. Itās awesome for the sake of learning, and you can do a lot with it. But you really donāt need that stuff (I barely comprehend anything if we talk about peaks, frequencies, Hz, sine/square/whatever wave, etc.)
Actually I hitted a road block when mixing my own stuff. I just felt, not that I needed, but that it was soooo convenient to have external ā ā ā ā . You know what I mean?
Cool sounds good! If you have any questions lmk!
Love the focus, the groove is tight. Just watched that isht 5 times in a row.
This is a lot of chit chat. Well, a lot has been noted. From reading this thread some points seem rational. Itās probably worth trying out a stem divide program. Secondly, a screen audio capture.
It should be possible to capture audio from your web browser, then split the stems to where you can pick individual notes, and pitch shift them to a C note.
