Medi-Cal. Also known as Medicaid in California

This the free health insurance the state of California gives disabled or low income families to cover a large array of medical expenses.

But I was just going to ask if anyone has the following experience. This has happened to me at least three times.

I called Social Security up several years ago to ask a simple question. I talked to the lady I got on the phone for a few moments.
A few days later I got a form in the mail to fill out to see if I was still eligible for SSDI which I had been getting for more than twenty years. Coincidence? I don’t know. They only send me these forms every couple of years and I was surprised that I got this.

I( have nothing to hide from Social Security but these forms are a pain in the you know what. I mail my pay stubs in dutifully each month, I report all changes in assets or living situating. But my question for lady from Social Security was very innocent and minor and I wondered why I got the forms in the mail.

And three weeks ago, I lost my wallet. I was actually in the huge University college library using their computers for free to do schoolwork and I took my wallet out at one point to find my pin # to log into my class. I set my wallet down for a second and I did my work and left, but when I got home I realized I had left it at the college so I walked back but my wallet was gone.

The first thing I did was call my credit card companies to cancel my credit cards so no one could use them, I also called my car towing service to report the loss. And I called Medicaid to get a new card. That was a week ago. Yesterday I get a letter from Medicaid with a re-determination form in it to see if I was still eligible for benefits WTH? I t seems I just filled out one about 6 months ago and they are only supposed to come every one or two years. Coincidence? Its very aggravating and I have a lot going on and filling out this form is going to stress me for a week while I get out my files and try to find my pay stubs for the past 6 months that Medicaid requests, and I need copies of the last 6 months of my bank statements and some other things. Maybe I’m missing something here but I wonder what the reasoning is behind these annoyances?

Medical is Social security, medi-caid is from the state, they’re two different beasts.
You qualify for medical if you get SSDI, but you only qualify for medicaid if your dirt poor. You can’t own any assets, or have money in the bank, own more than one vehicle etc.

If you do have both- medicare and medicaid, then you have to reassure them you still qualify (still dirt poor) it seems whenever your name come up.

I don’t know about all this. I would call and make sure everything is okay.

I live in WA so I don’t know what goes on in CA but I am on Medicare (SS) as well as Medicaid (WA state) and I worry all the time that I will lose my coverage. I get SSDI too. I hope you are able to get through this rough patch. It does sound like a pain in the ass and upsetting. Sorry you have to deal with it.
