May 1st celebrations, Vappu

Due to the coronavirus pandemic there won’t be traditional May 1st (Vappu) celebrations. Here is one video from 2019 when there were traditional celebrations. Maybe 2022 will be different. I am going to ride my bicycle wearing my white hat that I got from the university when I studied there.

We don’t really celebrate the first of May but it is a national holiday.

I have a funny Vappu story. It was the year 1987 and I had visited my sister in Moscow, the USSR in March 1987. During this trip I purchased a Soviet flag that I brought back to the city where I studied in one technological university. Then Vappu came and my student friends had made their own alcohol mix that I also drank. I was not used to alcohol beverages and so I had passed out. I used to keep this Soviet flag on the wall of my room and when I woke up I noticed that the flag was gone. Later on the 1st of May 1987 I asked what happened to this flag and my student friends told that they had taken it and they went to a parade with it. They told that they are going to return it. Now 34 years has passed and the flag has not been returned yet. Maybe it was the fate of the USSR. A couple of years ago I purchased a new Soviet flag. My hobby in America was to collect flags of different nations where I visited. This was Vappu of 1987.
