Long term progress through medication

Do you get better as time continues to go on, on the meds. I know I’ve been meds for a year and a half almost and I still continue to get and feel better (knock on wood), but still have my up and downs. So wondering how you’ve done with meds.

  • They continue to make me better
  • Once I was on them I was on them, no better or no worse after they “kicked in”
  • They used to work better, now they’re starting to/have stopped helping me as much or at all
  • They never worked for me
  • I don’t take meds

I’ve found med’s that I can be comfortable on and that control my symptoms. They continue to work for me though I have taken them for many years. Geodon and Seroquel keep me about as stable as I can be.

Once they kicked in, they kept me sane, but made me feel rubbish and low functioning.

My antipsychotic (Haldol) worked within a few hours of my first dose of it. I have been on it since 2009. Love it. It has given me a new lease on life. I was tried on these new-fangled meds before the Haldol, and they just made me fat and lazy. Haldol kicks me in the butt and gets me moving. I am dead in the morning, but I go to the bathroom, and while I’m in there I see my meds and take them. Same thing in the evening. Use bathroom - see and take meds - go to bed.

Meds helped stabilize my mood and that’s about it.

Every stable days becomes a stable week… and every week grows…

It’s been almost three years now… and I’m doing better now then three years ago.

The meds have needed a little adjusting here and there, but it’s been getting better.

I’ve found a medication that works for me and seems to have minimal side effects, orap. However, I’m unconvinced I have a long term condition that needs medicating since all of my non-withdrawal symptoms for the past few years have been very mild.

Haldol - thats one of the early generation anti-psychotics yeah? Is it supposed to make you energised? I’m finding the only downside I suffer is lack of enthusiasm and energy. Doctor says a lot has to do with my type 2 Diabetes, but I think it could be more than that.

I am also on Pristiq which is an anti-depressant that is supposed to make you a little energised, but its not at the level I feel is appropriate to function normally most of the day. Is Haldol supposed to give you the ‘zest’ for life you describe or is it perhaps just in your case… would love to know - I appreciate the response.

Hello @SiriusAnkh. Haldol is one of the old meds. According to my psychiatrist, I am only one of a handful of people he has treated in his career who gets a “boost” from Haldol. Most people get flat from it, or have nasty side effects. I’ve seen a lot of people who have been on it and they had a negative reaction to it. I guess I’m just wired a bit differently.

There should be an other option dude. ‘They make me better but not all they way’. Most people would fall into this category , I’d wager.
