Esther Perel says that “We live in a time where the self is viewed as fragile.”  Mental toughness is the opposite of that.  In the field of sports psychology, top athletes’ ability to thrive on stress, dissolve pressure, deal swiftly and decisively with tough situations, manage distractions, be unafraid of conflict and confrontation, perform in the upper ranges of their potential more consistently, excel in the clutch of pressure, and drive relentlessly in pursuit of a goal, regardless of how long it takes or how much pain is involved has been an area of great interest.  This type of resilience in sports has been termed “mental toughness.”  Mental toughness is an attitude that an athlete takes with them into every situation.  It is the result of adversity training and emotional strength training.  It is the mind’s ability to deal effectively with adversity- to rise through adversity.  In the midst of winter, there resides in you an invincible summer.  It is being driven by purpose, committed, dedicated, courageous and filled with heart.  It means consistently making the right small choices from moment to moment when confronted with options to veer off track.  It means welcoming resistance because it will make you stronger.  Mental toughness grows by refusing to just take the path of least resistance and welcoming challenges.  According to sports psychologist Jason Selk, mental weakness, in contrast to mental toughness, comes from the biological propensity to focus on the negatives and problems.  Those who are mentally tough focus in the face of negatives or problems on solutions and what they could possibly do to make it better.  What is one thing you could do to improve this situation.  Build mental toughness

It means learning to stop any tendency toward stress sensitization or a delicate emotional sensitivity and building distress tolerance. You have to toughen up around all of the wounds from traumatic events and become open and loose. Being mentally tough also includes taking pride in overcoming difficulties; the greater the difficulty, the greater the pride.

Controlling your thoughts is half the battle. Become aware of the way you talk to yourself. You have to give yourself the right messages during times of stress. What do you say to yourself when the road gets rough? You can upgrade the inner dialogue you have with yourself. We all talk to ourselves internally, sometimes resourcefully, sometimes negatively, irrationally or critically, sometimes with our own voice, sometimes with the voice of others. You can learn how to respond effectively with the right words and pictures formed in your mind to the voice in your head that gives you negative or distorted messages. If the voices you hear try to disempower you, you can infantilize them by pointing out their childishness and restore your power. With practice you can learn to disrupt and tame negative thinking cycles. If you have sabotaging thoughts, you can learn how to answer them back with conviction. If you have catastrophic thoughts or irrational deep beliefs, you can challenge and refute them. If you get caught in counter-productive thinking traps where you jump to conclusions with insufficient evidence, you can learn to recognize them, put bad events in perspective, think rationally, and take the focus away from counter-productive thinking and shut it down. You can think of your mind like a glass of water. There may be dirty water in the glass colored by negative, irrational or critical thoughts. But, if you run a faucet of clean water into the glass continually, the dirty water gets displaced. Run a faucet of resourceful positive thinking into your mind.

Talk to yourself better. Learn to talk to yourself with deep confidence. What is the tone of your self-talk?

Some people may think that being mean or cruel is mentally tough, but cruelty is unnecessary and morally wrong. One can face the cruelty and meanness of others with firmness. Being responsible is being mentally tough. The greater the responsibility ably shouldered the tougher you are.

Finally, mental toughness means maintaining composure, maintaining poise under pressure, keeping your cool when others around you are losing their cool. It means keeping your composure despite repeated provocations. It means remaining calm and centered even under the duress of the most serious storms of life. It is the ability to execute well under pressure. Some say that mental toughness is having backbone or steel in your spine. Be stronger than your trials and woes. It means managing distractions that take your focus away from what’s important. It means answering criticism and responding to doubt. It means resisting others’ negativity and standing firm in the face of those who try to pull you down.

You have to believe in yourself to be mentally tough. You build belief by working intensely to make believing in yourself possible. Those who seem to have less talent but who are mentally tough can achieve great success through desire, resolve, perseverance and attitude. Those with talent and the attitude of mental toughness can become superstars. (Kuehl et al., 2005) Toughness is in the soul and the spirit, an indomitable will. The mind and the spirit can toughen in the face of difficulty.

You need a strong mental attitude. It comes from pictures and words you form in your mind. Your mind has to be the strongest part of your body. The only reason someone becomes mentally tough is because they clawed their way there. Undergo some suffering willingly to inoculate you against hardship and become tougher

Success comes to those who can weather the storm, forged into personality strength going through ■■■■ storm after ■■■■ storm, but also by the powers of true affection, to the victorious holding the line in the full course of psychological warfare. All of the challenges in life are good mental training. As Eric Geitens suggests, “Move through hardship and integrate it in a way to become better.” Take Jason Selk’s advice, be “relentlessly solution focused.” Adversity is a challenge to learn a new empowering language and have the answer for anything that comes at you. Develop a natural uncanny flair to handle tough situations and pull through adversity with a great spirit. Outmaneuver and out-think whatever adversary you’re looking at. No matter how exotic or great the pressure, learn to be resolute and unflinching. Responsibility is the most important toughness. Live responsibly. Lead responsibly. Build an undefeatable mind, a fortress of strength, an armor that makes you feel invincible. Keep pushing yourself to the next level. Hold yourself steady when the weather turns stormy. Handle the goddamn pressure. Make yourself strong. Become psychologically fit as well as physically fit and enjoy the high of feeling strong. Build mental toughness through adversity training and through mindset, movement, nutrition and recovery. Swing the weighted bat before you go to the plate.
