i agree. probably one of my fav led zeppelin songs.

Awesome song…

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying… mama, there ain’t no denyin’
I’ve been flying, ain’t no denyin’, no denyin’

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I’ve been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin’ through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.

When I’m on, when I’m on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I’m down…
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I’m down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

You may also find this interpretation intersting...though I think the elders of a gentle race also may refer to the Eldar or Elves of JRR Tolkien, since Zeppelin was influenced by Lord of the Rings and makes mention of it in several songs..

This song is about so much more than drugs or some trip to morroco.

"a traveler of both time and space"
"sit with elders of the gentle race"
"They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed"
"And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I’ve been."
"I’ve been flying, ain’t no denyin’, no denyin’"

Kashmir is the principal point of conflict, a tiny nation in dispute between Pakistan and India.
The history of this area, once the great Rama empire,is what made Robert Oppemheimer say the now famous words
and I qoute from Wikipedia...As Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the demonstration, he later said that a line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita came to mind:
"I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds"

"This wasted land" is so because of a nuclear war fought there 5000 years ago.
Recorded in thier ancient records, along with hundreds of differnt types of flying machines, both terrestial and interstellar, is a war so devasating between a "gentle race" of spiritual people and a materialistic race of "war mongers" bent on world domination that it distroyed both sides.

boy that’s some post !! you are so deep !! and smart !!

With Kashmir I tend to lean more towards the literal Kashmir in ancient times…

Obvious LOTR influenced songs are like Ramble On speaking of Gollum and the evil one, or Battle of Evermore with lyrics about the Dark Lord riding in force tonight, and the Ringwraiths ride in black

yeah, I always am amazed Plant included Middle Earth things like that in his work…you are an amazing person @e_lunaseer such witty and well thought out posts.

Haven’t heard that one in a long time, either. Heard “been a long time since I’ve rocked and rolled” in a car commercial years ago. I read that the payments they demand for use of their songs is so outrageous that it’s not worth paying. Have any of their songs been used on American Idol or The Voice?

Great album–boy do I remember that song!
