Just a thought

Doctors dont really know the full extent of schizophrenia. In fact the only people who get how bad it is are the ones who have it.

This I agree with. Are there working psychiatrists who have sz? I wonder.

I refuse to let anyone who hasn’t had to live with my heart condition treat it. They just don’t understand what it’s like to have it and can’t be trusted because of this.

I agree with this

You folks realize that those of us with SZ are more likely to have impaired cognition and therefore are a higher risk to make mistakes in complicated, high-pressure roles?

Theres a woman at my doctors office who has schizophrenia and has a doctorate degree. She does a lot of.work setting up programs and stuff. Everyone is different. Im pursuing my masters in clinical health counseling so i can be a counselor who helps people with schizophrenia.

I’ve heard that a lot, but I don’t agree. Schizophrenia is a unique experience even between those who have it, and I cannot comment on what another person who has schizophrenia experiences. I don’t have strong delusions. From a compassion aspect, I can see that, but I can’t treat jack doo doo about schizophrenia.

A doctor isn’t required to have diabetes to know how to treat it.

If I may make a recommendation. Consider yourself a good practitioner not because of your schizophrenia nor in spite of it, but because you have a desire to treat and help people who struggle with mental health. Having schizophrenia will make you empathetic with your patients, but the desire to listen to them and to treat them is what will make you a good clinician.

I just had to drop a therapist because they made it about them. Everything I said they told me a story about their life that they think relates to my situations. Don’t do that. Maybe once in a while when it is very very applicable, but it’s horribly tacky and damaging. My point is, when treating someone it’s not about your mental health journey, it’s about the patient’s mental health journey.

Thats how my therapist is now. He always talks about himself. It is really annoying.
