Jonestown trigger warning

I was reading about the Jonestown massacre, and was shaken by what happened. I read a comment from someone that mentioned schizophrenics being the reason things like this happened. I was curious if in an unmediated schizophrenic would fall for something like this. Or if they would be suspicious of it? I know I’ve almost fallen pray to an occult before while I was psychotic. What are the chances we become the victims?

even normal people fall for stuff like this. so an unmedicated sz would possibly fall prey to it more easily

I wish bad things like this never happened, but they did…moving on now…

I know. It’s so sad.

I remember when it happened. Those people who died were not dumb. It wasn’t a lack of intelligence that made them commit suicide. History abounds with charismatic leaders getting people to do what the leader wants no matter how unbelievable or stupid it looks to outsiders.

People believe in cults because they want to believe, for whatever reason. Like @anon31257746 said, even normal, supposedly rational, intelligent people can get caught up in these cults. And get trapped.

A schizophrenic, unmedicated or not, could fall for a cult just like anyone else. I would think that being in a cult would have certain pressures that might be too much for them though.

Yea this story really saddened me. Especially for the children. I hope no one ever goes through something like this, ever.

There’s recordings. A lot of those people didn’t commit suicide… you can hear children cry as they are force fed cyanide and their mothers begging for that lunatic to stop. People who ran were shot. More were forced by others to ingest poison.

When he told them all it was time to go, you can hear a lot of them start crying, nobody wanted to kill themselves. He forced them to, and waited until he was the last one to die to ensure the others did as well.

Yeah look at Scientology. That has uber money and it’s just a crock invented by a science fiction writer.

Jonestown was horrible. To see the poor and disadvantaged played upon which is what they were is just absolutely without sense or reason!

I was just thinking about them. That religion is so creepy.

I think anybody unhappy where they are at could be susceptible to a lure. There’s also the expression “if you believe in nothing, you’ll fall for anything”.

I’ve heard that expression before. Good one.

I remember Jonestown.

What a terrible two weeks for the city of San Francisco: First was Jonestown, where over 900 people drank cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in Guyana, then Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Milk assassinated.

Like Manson, Jim Jones was a cult of personality.
