My dad’s 80 in December
I have a funny story. I went to my parents place and my dad said he heard this great song on the radio. The words were imagine there’s no heaven. I said “dad, that’s John Lennon”. He said “who is John Lennon?”. I said “you know. From the beatles” and he had no idea who the Beatles were. What planet has he been living on?
Oh maaaan ! ! ! That’s funny.
I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a teenager and thought it was amazing. I didn’t find out till much much later it was John Lennon.
Kind of an overrated song, imo. Too simplistic and idealistic, lyrically. It’s a beautiful idea, though, at least.
I mean “Imagine” of course.
I’m not a fan.
He was an abusive husband and father and I feel, his music is overrated.
I don’t know why people remember him so fondly.
Must be nostalgia.
He was simply human, @GoldenRex. One of the most definitive figures that was deemed as one of the “ultimate tortured artists”. And I don’t necessarily believe the whole concept is nonsense, either.
Saying he was “simply human” when he has a history of spousal and child abuse is dismissing a lot of bad behavior.
You’re entitled to your opinion,
I just happen to think he was a â– â– â– â– person and a mediocre artist.
I like some of his songs a lot.
I’ve also heard he wasn’t the nicest person, and that he apparently had a handsome stock portfolio, yet aligned himself with every trendy leftist cause.
That all being said the sixties and seventies were bizarre times, and I think people sought heroes wherever they could find them.
One glaring error. He was assassinated in December.
It was true he was not a nice person.
There’s many examples of that.
People like to say the Beatles were overrated or that they just don’t like the Beatles or specifically dislike John Lennon. No one is going to please everyone but sometimes I wonder about people who dismiss them, but it surprises me that they can’t even acknowledge their contribution to the music world or their contribution to the world. Something like Beatlemania had never been seen before. Or since. It just seems that a band that can generate that much excitement and interest should be given a little credit for at least something.
I think I agree, @77nick77. What did he do after he quit drugs? He decided to go the idealist route. I think I’ve read somewhere that idealists are actually very angry people. He actually longed to see himself in a balanced light. The guy could have afforded a decent therapist, for crying out loud!
At first I thought that @77nick77 started this thread
