I've given up vaping. Lets see how far I get

Still off vaping. I feel withdrawal symptoms most of the day.

But I’m using nicotine lozenges. I’m trying to keep the lozenges to one every 3 hours.

Nicotine is nasty.

I wonder if nicotine lozenges are just prolonging the pain. We’ll see…

There is no ‘painless’ way to give up nicotine. It lasts several weeks of craving. All the cessation methods lengthen the pain.

Bite the bullet, realise it is just a few weeks of hell and break the beasts back once and for all.

Exercise, suck on a lollipop, chew sugar free gum, go for a walk, twiddle your thumbs etc. Just don’t have any nicotine for a few weeks and it is done. The harder it is the more it reminds you to never go back rather than have to go through that again.

While it’s true that it can break the the physical addiction in a few weeks to a few months, the truth is, if you are a long time smoker like I have been, the temptation from the habit itself may always be there.

I quit for like a year and a half while psychotic, but when I returned back home, was drawn back in by my mothers smoking.

More recently, my mom quit smoking for many months for her spinal surgery and recovery and started back up.

So, if you’ve been smoking for years, the truth is, while the actual withdrawal symptoms are supposed to be over within a few weeks to a few months, you may be fighting the urge to restart the habit for a long time.

Trust me on this. I started when I was 16, have quit long term twice and got drawn back in. The urge may pop back up occasionally for a long time, if not until the day you die. Especially if you are around other smokers.

The good news, is it should get easier and easier the longer you go.

You don’t like my theory on it but the underlying desire to smoke is based upon the cold, often subconscious desire to die. The feeling of not caring or wanting to live underpins cigarette smoking.

Thus even though the nicotine craving can be broken in a matter of weeks then if the underlying feeling of not wanting to live remains then the desire to smoke again will remain.

Smoking is a symptom when the underlying cause is lack of lustre for life. The desire to smoke again will rear its ugly head for as long as you don’t love life or yourself.

Lol. You’re right. I don’t like your theory and I believe its not true. I started smoking when I was young because I thought it was cool and my friends did it, not because I wanted to die.

I restarted again after quitting, because of several reasons. 1. The habit itself can come back to haunt you and pull you in because you’ve done it the majority of your life. 2. boredom and the need to feel a rush. 3. The third one is a perhaps, but perhaps some people are more prone to addictive habits like smoking. 4. Temptation to resume because of others habits.

None of which were the desire to end my life. But I realize your going to hold that opinion, regardless of what I say.

I think some people are able to quit forever with smaller amounts of troubles, like my sister. Others of us will always have always have that monkey on our back, nagging at us from time to time.

I tried smokes when i was like 27 i just wanted to see what the fuss was about. So i smoked 2 cigarettes back to back lol didnt do much for me so that was my foray into smoking :sweat_smile:

I think the subconcious desire theory is probably incorrect. But maybe a very low percentage would chain smoke and drink copious amounts of alcohol as a slow suicide due to liver failure or whatever (another theory i read about) . Cigs and alcohol are culturally accepted opposed to jumping off a cliff.

Most people just drink or smoke to relax , or cope with life , or as bowens said because its ‘cool’

Actually your giving up nicotine. Vaping was just the form to get it.
I kinda think vaping was a sneaky way to make smoking more accessible.

I think people develop addictions because in various ways it makes them feel better, helps with stress, or numbs personal pain. People aren’t addicted to things because they want to die. That is the serious effect to having a dangerous addiction though. The nature of the beast.

I guess it is too simplistic to come up with an all encompassing theory to come up with all the reasons people smoke.

I stand corrected.

Addiction, its triggers and relapses are complex.

If smoking tobacco/nicotine is your thing so be it.

Good luck with it all, whatever you decide to do with it.

lol. Well, its not “my thing” I quit smoking, ended up vaping now and will probably try to quit vaping at some point as well. I’m really not trying to kill myself. Truly :slight_smile: .

Likely when I get Wellbutrin, as I’ve heard it can block nicotine receptors anyway.

I’d also like to say, that like once every 2 or 3 months or so, because my mom has had cigarettes on the property, I sneak out and have a cigarette. My nicotine chemical addiction is filled through vaping, yet I still feel the urge to smoke a cigarette on occasion. Usually I resist, but with easy access I sometimes cave. This kind of demonstrates what I was saying above. The chemical dependence is satisfied through vaping but the old habit still lingers in your mind for a long time when youve smoke for over 30 years. At least for me.

My mom has to quit again for a second spinal surgery, so hopefully, this will remove the temptation.

I’m still off the vape. Withdrawal is still pretty rough.

I’m minimizing my use of nicotine lozenges though.

I recently minimized my vaping nicotine to 5mg. I used to vape 40mg.

Now I need to quit nicotine lozenges :worried:
