Back in about 1992 I had a friend at my board & care. Nice guy, really funny, cool to hang around. One day he came up to me all excited and showed me a leaflet. Smokey Robinson was going to be at this local church.
Smokey Robinson was huge in the sixties. “Tears of a Clown”, “Tracks of my Tears”. Him and his band had several hits and he’s kind of a legend in the music world.
My friend wanted to go see him so we ate dinner, took our meds and figured out how to get to the church on a bus. I think the flyer said Smokey started out at 7:00 pm. We got there and the church was packed. And Smokey walked out on stage—and gave a 60 minute talk about being a born again Christian. He didn’t sing one song; he just talked. It was actually pretty boring and we felt cheated even though the talk was free. We kinda laughed about the experience later but we were pretty mad at the time.
