Did you know your psych team goes to pharmaceutical company dinners where they are pitched on certain meds? The same thing is true for regular docs.
I hate it when I’m at the doctor and I see reps come in,
Somehow it offends me.
We are being sold to the highest bidder.
I don’t think its that black and white,
But it is pretty unsettling how close doctors are to pharmaceutical reps.
Yes, and to see them take all-expenses paid trips abroad, etc.
I’m sure they do to go to ‘conferences.’
It’s how capitalism works. They also give your shrink free samples which can be of good use for the patients. It’s not new and just how it works. Blaming shrinks for the problem is rather misguided.
It is the status quo, yes. But I remember how my last shrink’s mouth used to water when writing up scripts for something new… Nothing I can do about it, tho. Plus it’s human nature to be swayed by “glittering prizes and endless compromises,” shattering “the illusion of integrity.” I borrow from old Rush.
Looks like somebody gets on their knees for the shrink and can’t see how it would obviously effect what they prescribe.
Psychiatrists get kickbacks for prescribing newer pharmaceuticals, but sometimes they’re better than the old stuff.
I have to agree, in the case of Vraylar so far.
It may be a bit of a racket, but it also helps people with free meds here, while I was under the care of the mental health clinic here they supplied the meds free for a year under a program they have, now I’m at my GP, i have to co pay for my meds.
Many people who are in bad shape and can not afford meds are treated, so I guess it is a bit of give and take
They didn’t give me any free meds when I needed them. I had to go to an emergency room just to get a shot.
The pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to influence utilization with direct-to-consumer advertising and physician detailing is offset by the insurance industry’s efforts to restrict formularies. The real battle is between them. Prescribers and patients are simply caught in the crossfire.
Free markets are great. Invent and profit at will. Conflict of interest when other people’s lives are at stake, however, is tragic. Physicians’ clinical judgement should be held to no less rigorous standards than a judge in our legal system which ideally and for the most part is free of commercial influences.
My current psychiatrist deals with sales reps all the time.
She loves to prescribe the latest brand name drugs first and foremost.
I don’t know if I like this too much.
Sorry for snapping at you Rogue. I just think it is highly unethical that psych teams reap benefits for prescribing us certain meds.
Matey it’s all good. Years ago I’d have a crack but it isn’t good to fight on the boards. All’s I’m saying is that is a pretty screwed up system. I don’t have answers for it either but it is what it is. I’m not trying to be critical I’m just putting it out there that we need to play the game so to speak for our benefit.
It’s nothing I’m too keen about and you have some valid points. My point is just that we can’t change that…It’s all good and thanks for apologizing. Honestly. I like some good interaction on these boards and I like some passion. No slight. Lets agree to get along!
It’s offensive. I notice they were more apparent at my more upscale doctors offices. Those people have no shame.
Wisely said.1515
