Is there schizophrenics who are permanently locked up in mental hospitals?

When I was hospitalized for the first time I thought they will lock me up for life in a mental hospital far away.

When I was at a big psychiatric hospital there was a sz there who I met on the grounds who had to live there because he threw a pot of boiling water on a mental health nurse who was visiting him at home

But yeah if a sz does something violent they can get trapped in the corrections system.

That’s a good question, there might be a few cases but I think it would be extremely rare here in Canada. A while back a guy name Vincent Li who had schizophrenia beheaded a guy on a bus. According to this article he was institutionalized for many years but was eventually released and allowed to live on his own in the community, there were conditions on his freedom, like he has to take his medication…

I remember that story in the news, it was before I got sz.

If a sz does something violent causing serious injury or death and doesn’t agree to take medication and/or have insight and/or continues to be violent and other stuff it can be for life

But most of the time - people with an MI usually have a co-morbid condition with alcohol or drugs when they come into contact with court services.

Its a well known fact - that people misuse drugs with MI to self-medicate. Look at all the weed threads we have on here.

Its the self-medication that tips them over the edge. Not the disease itself.

Its essentially a very bad coping strategy.

This is exactly what happened to me!

I know some people in Denmark who live in mental health grouphomes and will keep doing so for life.
We called them Paragraph 85’ers.

Paragraph 85 has been abolished, so no one gets given it anymore, and people usually only get given stays for up to 5 years before their case needs to be renewed.

I did make friends with a girl who’d lived for 9 years in a psych ward due to a Treatment Order.

For my second psychosis I was friends with someone who’d been forensic, and he’d been put into the local community ward to try and get him back out there

Not really sure we understood each other, but I looked up to him when I was in there.

You could tell he was deep down a nice person

We got on, but he did encourage me to believe in some dangerous things.

I lost contact, but I hope he’s doing ok now

South Africans are an amazing group of people

They have forensic wards I think they are called over here. Basically a locked down ward for serious offences but out of the traditional prison system.

I believe there are. When I was in jail at one point I was going to be sent to a state psychiatric hospital. From my understanding there are people who stay there for years because they are deemed unfit to stand trial. There is a test people who are deemed incompetent have to take. What I heard is that some people simply fail to pass the evaluation and remain in the state hospitals. I’m sure it also depends on what crime was committed.

This article is about the forensic hospital in Sydney where I live- patients are frequently in there indefinitely:

Yeah lol. Try telling that to a 53 yr old Crack Addict with an Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder with no insight.

My clarity is fading - but im determind to save the bloody woman.

I believe Sarah Connor was on a indefinite stay in the psych ward before Arnold rescued her :relaxed:

Hello, how is the stopping of medication going for you?

Heya- well the good news is I’m not psychotic yet! I have a bit of trouble getting off to sleep. I’ve just started working again recently which has caused a massive increase in anxiety so not sure how long I’ll be stable for.

Hopefully you’ll be okay and thanks for replying. How long is it now? I made it six months last time

I think it must be getting close to six months now, so not too bad. I hope it doesn’t return too- it’s such a gamble

I’m really glad for you. Try to keep stress to a minimum, my relapse was triggered by arguments with my ex partner and family members. You just need to concentrate on having a relaxed and peaceful life.

I’ve been very stable lately on 5mg Olanzapine. But am considering a final attempt at coming off medication again.
