Our Ap’s
I have gained 30kgs.
Damn
Yes, weight gain is often listed as a side effect. AP’s affect neurotransmitters in various ways. Neurotransmitters like Dopamine regulate hunger, as well as concentration, sleep, learning, and happiness. They can alter your metabolism too.
What I didn’t know until recently, is that some meds can also increase cravings for other things too, like alcohol. I had this with mirtazapine. It made me relapse.
Yes.I exercise a lot but my body fat is still high, probably my metabolism is affected by the meds
Abilify made me want to eat all the things. Then I took Ozempic (weekly injection for diabetes), and my hunger died down a bit. I’ve lost 13 pounds in the last 10 weeks.
“you eat a lot”, she said.
“It’s not the meds, No.
I know 2 people who take
APs and have normal weight”
I dont eat much,
but I don’t move at all.
That’s why I don’t lose weight
It depends on the meds.
I’m losing weight on abilify because I’m calorie counting. My calorie intake is that of a person on no meds.
If I was on Olanzapine then my calorie intake would need to be much lower probably to lose weight.
Some APs made me feel hungry all day long. I couldn’t feel full, ever, like even if I just ate a big meal, at the end of it I’d still be hungry.
I’m on Haldol now and I’m able to eat small portions and lose weight
Yes it effects your weight easily by increasing your appetite. Other than that if you watch your calorie intake you shouldn’t gain a pound!
Lol try 9 stone (44 KGs)
What bothers me about it is how little psychiatrists care. They just say “oh you just don’t do enough exercise” like they don’t see it as part of their problem at all even though it clearly wasn’t an issue before I started taking the meds. And it seems to affect most people on them, I’m not like the only one.
Weight gain depends on the medication you are on and your particular biology/metabolism. But some medications are notorious for packing on the pounds.
I gained weight and weighed 240lbs on olanzapine.
I quit olanzapine and went on Lurasidone and lost over 75lbs and hit my BMI weight.
My GP basically told me I’m not trying hard enough with my jogging attempts. It shows how little informed they are.
He has no right telling you that. You seem to be trying.
Don’t feel bad, my doctor told me to go to buy a gym membership. I did and I went and didn’t lose any weight. It’s the meds not you. I also tried dieting, no effect.
Thanks @GrayBear and @Headspark
Sorry to hear your gym membership thing didn’t help with the weight loss.
I tried the gym route too when I had money but had to abandon that as I felt everyone was staring at my fat.
Anyway I’m on a lower dose of medication now and so the attempts continue.
yeah, I think it does,
but also sitting too much.
I’ve been buff before on psych meds, many times I was buff,
then a setback happens.
these days I’m about average, but I swear by super duper smoothies for weight control.
Yeah, it was a 1 year membership (Contract) $50.00/month, I guess that equates to about £30. Total waste of money.
Well that could help some. When I lowered my dose of olanzapine I did lose quite a bit of weight, but it wasn’t until I quit and switched meds that I became a normal healthy weight.
