Is it possible to have schizophrenia but never had positive symptoms?

I never thought so. Some of you do ?

As I understand it schizophrenia is an umbrella term for a bunch of similar problems. In the future we all might have different diagnosis and they just don’t know what to call what we have now. Sort of like how there are a bunch of disorders in the autistic spectrum.

It looks like in ICD, but not DSM, simple schizophrenia does not necessarily involve positive symptoms.
For a regular sz diagnosis, you need at least some positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions or disorganized thought/behavior)

I’d imagine positive and negative are the points of the diagnostic criteria.

It may eventually be shown to be different things but I suspect a similar pathway in most folk. Just the similarity in delusional thought makes me suspect we’re all on a spectrum. Not little isolated disorders.

do you have depression? cognitive and negative symptoms share a lot of similarities with depression

Once upon a time to diagnose it they used only the negative symptoms (Kraepelin).

For me off meds :

Hallucinations… :x:
Delusions :heavy_check_mark:
Thought disorders (unusual or dysfunctional ways of thinking) :heavy_check_mark:
Movement disorders (agitated body movements) :x:

But I don’t have any positive symptoms on meds, just negatives and cognitive. (Hmmm… I still have a few unusual beliefs though)

Not under the current DSM definition, no. Under past definitions yes.

I’m the same but I’m not cognitive enough to know whether I have cognitive symptoms or not…

I’ve been told I have cognitive impairment by my pdoc.

No, you know, I don’t think it is possible with Schizophrenia. Positive symptoms are central to the diagnostic criteria.

I think I will ask my Pdoc if he thinks so. He doesn’t care for terms like “negative symptoms” and “cognitive impairment” or “sarcosine”

all he wants to do is prescribe me my 4 meds and make sure everything is fine
