Is it custom to tip takeaway delivery drivers in the States?

People do sometimes tip here in Norway for good service, but I don’t think it’s expected from society. Personally I don’t tip because of bad economy. Waiters probably make significantly more than me.

Maybe where you are waiters are not paid less than minimum wage?

That’s right. Nobody is supposed to get paid under minimum wage. It does happen though, but it’s against the law. A company that builds ships were just busted for hiring people illegaly paying a lot less than minimum wage. They will be prosecuted by the government.

There is a exception though. If you run your own business and it doesen’t go well you can end up with a lot less than minimum wage. Especially farmers are struggling in my country because of international competition. But this year the goverment are giving them a historically high rise in sallary. Sallaries are partially goverment funded for farmers since the country wants to have their own supply of food in case of a crisis.

there was another impressive tip once

i got 14 one dollar bills in one tip

then there was another one he tipped me in cash AND on the credit card

then there was another guy who just tipped $20 cash every time for no reason. When you got him you considered the night a blessing. I got him twice.

I dint go out much but ive always thought the idea of tipping was very classy. If your out all the time ofcourse it can add up, but if its a special occasion especially big tip is just a nice way of saying thank you tangibly.

When I bartended I got some nice tips. I did get minimum wage, though. Didn’t expect any tips but they were nice.

With gas being so high in price right now, it just seems like the right thing to do – tipping your delivery drivers heavy. If you don’t want to pay for delivery charge and tip, then go pick the food up yourself.

The last thing you want to do is become known as a bad tipper amongst delivery drivers at the restaurants you order delivery from. You will get cold food, most likely.

Think if you’re disabled - going to get food is a problem for some…

System needs to recalibrate to work for everyone.

Well yeah, if you’re disabled, that’s one thing. But the disabled person should still tip their delivery drivers for doing them a solid.

No - there is an issue with the tipping system. Reform it - make employers pay their employees living wages. There is a problem - covid - unvieled the problem and thats why people are opting out of the food industry. You can read articles on the issues they have finding employees and why.

Well yeah, if you’re going to totally reform it and let employees earn living wages (without tips) then that would be cool. But it ain’t gonna happen. So for the time being, I can’t think of any scenario where a person doesn’t tip a delivery driver for bringing them delicious food to their front door.

Yeah - its a problem - but true - i dont use delivery for take out cause food is too expensive and delivery fees and tips.

I know i cant afford it. I recently did it out of an emergency for pizza. And did tip 7$

I used to deliver for years. And I never get delivery nowadays, because I know what it’s like. I always go pick up the food, and I have agoraphobia, so delivery would be ideal on paper. But like you said, it’s just so much more expensive to get delivery with fees and tips and what not.

I was a valet driver at a casino when I was 19 and it was common to receive tips which were pooled.

Btw folks if you have a bichen car do not valet it. It will be performance tested.

OP:

I always tip and when I order pizza it is at least 20%.

My mom was a short order cook for 18 years at a thankless job. What @shutterbug says is true that food service employees are not paid a living wage so tips are a necessity.

But tbf I find the tip jar at a vape shop to be in poor taste.
