Is it a crime to withhold someone's mail?

I kind of got in a tiff with the secretary at the assisted living center where I live. I suspect her of doing other bad things towards me, but one thing she definitely did do was withhold this American express debit card I had sent to me in the mail. She held from me for at least a month and a half, and she wouldn’t have let me have it at all if my case manager didn’t intervene. Now I suspect that the replacement secretary will withhold my food stamp card replacement. It doesn’t look like that yet, but I kind of anticipate it. Could either of these people get in trouble for withholding my mail?

Taking someone else’s mail is illegal, not sure why they would do that.

i suspect sometimes my in laws of withholding mail from me. they made a rule that neither kay or me can check the mail.

I guess they might want you to diet with them, crimby. lol lol lol

but yeah, that’s illegal. they wouldn’t do that.

If they think that they are helping you somehow then i don’t know. Have you had issues with manic spending or sending letters in the past?
It sounds to me like they are looking out for your best interest. I don’t think you’ll get very far if you try to press charges against them or something like that.

@MeghillaGorilla1 if you don’t mind me asking.
Why are you back at new user status?

@Wave I can’t remember but I got penalized for writing something stupid.
They stripped me of my dignity, banned me, and I just got reinstated this morning.
What does new user status mean?

I guess it’s like being a new member.
Not sure what it really means.

Crimby if it’s a landlord doing it to you then yes I think it would be very illegal. But if you are in someone’s care and they are receiving your mail for you then no I don’t think they are committing a crime. I’m not a lawyer but I’m just trying to put myself in your shoes.

@crimby I agree with @MeghillaGorilla1.
I don’t think that it’s a crime if you are under their legal care.
But I’m not an attorney

I didn’t know I was. Very strange.

it sounds like where you are living is for 2 year olds have you considered getting out of there?

I’m pretty sure they are doing it to control me. It’s not in my best interest. If I don’t get my food stamp card by next Wednesday I’ll have to pay for my groceries with money I had set aside for other things.

Yes. The problem is that I have been declared “incapacitated”. I’m not sure I’m able to leave. One of the reasons I want my food stamp card is in case I decide to leave.

It means you can’t initiate PMs. It is only temporary, as long as you behave appropriately from now on.

It’s a federal offence in all western cultures to interfere with mail not addressed to you.

Sounds illegal. If they do it again raise hell.

I would be proactive and tell the secretary that you are expecting your card in the mail. Most people will want to help you if they got into the business of caring for others.

I believe that is illegal. However, do you have a Rep. Payee? Are you in control of all your finances? You should definitely complain. My heart goes out to you. That is just plain wrong. You did not deserve that, :frowning:
