Is 14 years old still considered a very young age?

and if somebody committed a serous crime at that age like burning a shop totally down should the shame stay with you for the rest of your life? This person did 4 months in a young offenders prison.

A 14-year-old should know better and be punished at the time of the offense, but they are also young and haven’t developed the necessary judgment yet so the punishment should also be moderate. I think if the person has kept their nose clean as an adult then it shouldn’t be held over their head. If they have an ongoing pattern of troubling behaviour then yes, it is fair to bring it up.

This person on a DBS criminal record check, this doesn’t come up on the basic but on the enhanced it comes up. The persons care team don’t know about this person juvenile offences as it didnt come up and this person only has very minor offices as an adult. Also this person has an intellectual disability so maybe this is a mitigating circumstance?

People all make mistakes. Some are worse than others. The person who did this is still a person, and still has the capacity to do good in the world. If they learned why their actions were wrong, and stopped doing those bad things, that is enough. If they use all their energy feeling guilty over their mistakes, they won’t have any energy left for doing good things.

They will never be able to go back to a time when they didn’t burn a shop down. But they don’t have to stay stuck in that moment for the rest of their life. That would be a waste of a life.
