This is the first I’ve heard of it being investigated for substance abuse. I didn’t know it acted on opioid receptors.
Kava works on opiod receptors and it has a street reputation as an anti psychotic.
Did you know; when you cry, endorphins flood your opiod receptors ?
I’m guessing this med will try to treat the negative symptoms of SZ, primarily focusing on depression.
That is their other drug, ITI-333.
As far as I know, Lumateperone does not act on opiod receptors.
ITI-333 isn’t being trialed in schizophrenia, but wasn’t there some news on opiod receptor dysfunction in schizophrenia recently?
Thanks, I misunderstood. I didn’t catch anything about opioid receptor dysfunction in schizophrenia, but it could explain why people with Sz are at an increased risk for substance abuse disorders.
I found it:
Reduced mu opioid receptor availability in schizophrenia revealed with [11C]-carfentanil positron emission tomographic Imaging
I don’t know whether this ITI-333 would help with that reduced availability or not. Not sure if it is an agonist or antagonist.
Edit: ITI-333 is a MOR partial agonist. I really don’t know what that might mean for schizophrenia.
