I do not suggest that we stick to just treating the symptoms and not the causes. To cure an illness you have to address the cause of it. If it was a pathogen you would not just keep fixing the damage done by it alone, if you could you would solve the problem and kill the pathogen. In our case it is in a way a sort of pathogen, called a retrovirus. A virus changes DNA. A retrovirus is a virus which gets into the first cell like the egg in the womb and is very lucky to get itself plugged into the Genome of the person.
So it all depends on your conception of the etiology of the illness for how you go on to treat it. Is it caused by a retrovirus, random mutation, maybe the mutation has some sort of advantage but is not worth the costs to brain function, is it a bacteria, brain injury, stress, environment, nurture? What ever the cause is we have to deal with it at the source of the problem.
