I will be attending a recovery meeting tomorrow night

yeah, i was talking to the woman who runs it and she was excited for me to go,

it is for all types of recovery but mainly drink and drugs but i will hopefully add a new perspective to it,

i will just be sitting and listening at first i think.

Are you in the process of recovery from either? Don’t recall hearing you share that before.

its for all types of recovery and i am still trying to recover from mental illness

Okay, that makes sense. Just so you know, people who are recovering from addictions are generally uncomfortable sharing around those who don’t have the same issues. That’s why groups like AA only have one open meeting a month and the rest are closed. If the group is mostly for those with substance abuse issues, your regular presence may make the meeting very uncomfortable for them to attend in the future.

It’s not uncommon for people to get cranky in 12 Step programs if someone with the wrong type of addiction show up at the meeting. God forbid someone from NA attends an AA meeting because there are no NA meetings that night and the person needs support. The AA members will complain about that for the next month in some groups. Which is silly, but still…

Not trying to discourage you, but just giving you a heads-up on what you’ll find in substance abuse recovery groups.

thanks barbie, the good thing about this particular group is that we are all equal,

i am quite good at judging things and i wouldn’t do this if i thought anyone would get upset about me being there, we are all in the same boat, we have all had problems of some kind at some point and of course some still do.

its for everybody really not just for one type or group of people.

Open support groups are a good thing. I should probably go to them more often. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own problems that we forget there are other people struggling with different kinds of issues out there. Sure doesn’t hurt to get a different view of things.

Hope your meeting goes well.

At twelve step meetings they want you to listen and not speak when you first arrive. You might see how things are in the group pertaining to people without drug or alcohol addictions. Different groups have different personalities. There is a group called “emotions anonymous” for people with no addiction but who have other problems. If this group doesn’t work out you could try that.

it was a great group
