I was watching a lecture on psychology yesterday

It said "there’s a theory, that humans are essentially robotic, that everything is flexatory (or whatever word) and that when ur five, someone can look at you and determine what you are going to turn into as an adult to a pretty close extent. Due to the fact that everything is reactionary and humans aren’t overtly creative with their actions. And life is almost predetermined (in a non theological way) "

What do you think about for you??

I think this is NOT true for me. I was a cool kid when I was 2-10. At least for my age. To think I’d come down with mental illness and substance abuse, which vastly changed who I am is not to have been predicted. You could have predicted it when I was 13,14,15 maybe. But I think even if this theory were true, I am a total anomaly. I forget who said this theory btw but the professor talked about it a bit.

I think any “all-or-nothing”, extreme way of thinking is wrong. I’ve always been odd, special, set-apart, and is this why I was abused, or is it why I reacted the way I did, or both? I say good luck figuring humans out, and anyone who says they have is fooling themselves, or just trying to fool others.

That theory seems to entirely discount free will.

I think you might have misunderstood them slightly. I think they were talking about predeterminism.

Just because we can’t see the causal connections, doesn’t mean they’re not there and basically predetermined. I’m not saying I believe everything is predetermined, though. I’m somewhat undecided.

I googled some stuff on predeterminism and free will and got articles from Christian theology to Quantum Physics and I still dont really see how free will and predeterminism can mesh. But thats just me I guess.

No, I don’t think they mesh well. I’m not a philosopher or anything, but that seems counter-intuitive. (My reply was to Goyankees but it doesn’t show when you reply to the first post… Confusing, I know. Sorry if you thought I was arguing with what you said.)

I think the path was definetely set in motion for me early on.

There is actually an old saying “show me the child at 7 and I’ll show you the adult”

I think we’re forgetting about chaos theory. Which says that while things may be predetermined in theory the smallest difference can result in a completely different outcome. Therefore there appears to be far more randomness then we would expect. Personally speaking it would be impossible to predict where I am today even 4 years ago. See my tag line

I predict we will all be dead in 120 years.

Dead or alive I’ll be old in 120 years

The other day I read a book where said we all determinate our life in another place (maybe cosmos or something like that) before born, and we compare our past life, for example if you in your past life were a bad person and take advantage of the disabled people, now in this life, for reestablish the karma, you choose any typus of suffering.

But I find this a bit difficult… Because in a war, the people who die, it would be so difficult that all the persons were bad in past liffes…or for example if I was bad in another life and I decide get ill in this, I’m making suffer my parents also,… I don’t know it’s all so complicated

There are many reasons people come up with to explain life and the way it is. I think it’s just easier to live it the best you can, learn from your mistakes, and plan for your future. Talking about things that cannot be proven even those things that happen and are unexplainable are just unproductive. I’m not against philosophizing but I’d rather do it with a purpose
