Put him in a ball. They have ones at the pet store specifically for gerbils.

Same here, but it’s been some decades. My gerbil loved the ball.

I’ve had 2 dwarf hamsters, in the past, at different times. They loved rolling around in the hamster ball. Never got hurt. Sometimes the ball got stuck under something, so I would just need to walk over and get it unstuck.

I’m sure a gerbil would love a ball, too.

You can put the ball into the enclosure, and then help the gerbil to climb into it. Then close it. That way, there is no risk of the gerbil getting loose outside of the cage, I mean without the ball.

And then when the gerbil is done running around in the ball, place the ball back into the enclosure and let them out. Then you just store the ball somewhere for later use.

Go see them at the pet store. Then you can enjoy and not take care
