I want to get back to playing the violin!

Used to play it as a kid and loved it but I had to study for my bar mitzvah so I had to put it to the side. Now I want to get back to playing! I used to have a high quality violin but lost it in the process of moving.

Violin players - What is the best sounding/easiest to play violin for around $500?

I would buy a $200 violin and buy the 4 strings for around $80 each for the right tone.

The more expensive violins have higher quality bridges that bear the weight of the strings well when they stretch.

The type of wood used for the violin should be light but plyable. High quality wood reverberates the sound better.

Inexpensive strings sound tinny and whiny. I played for several different orchestras so I bought expensive strings with warm, light tones.

I would spend $100 on the bow. It needs true horsehair and not synthetic hair. Synthetic hair doesn’t run across the strings properly. And you need high quality rosin and a shoulder rest.

How long have you played?

I played first chair for three different orchestras. My parents started me when I was five on the piano. I switched to playing violin when I was eight and I stopped when I was twenty. My teacher wanted me to become a professional violinist and go to Juilliard but I had severe anxiety and could no longer do solos in college. I taught violin for beginners when a teenager and it was super fun.

Wanted to add when you buy the strings, buy all four from the same company and same brand. Each company has slightly different tones and it’s noticeable when you play they are different brands. If a string breaks it’s better to order the same brand from the same company.

I played the violin as a child for about 4 years. I was dismal. I could play it good enough if someone else tuned it but i have no “ear”. I wish you luck in finding a nice instrument! Sounds like @sweetpotatopie knows what they’re talking about…

Not violin, but digital piano. I practice an hour a day, 5 days a
week. Time and effort doesn’t necessarily equate to competence. I’m a prime example of that. For instance after 19 years of study, I’m still at grade 6 or upper intermediate level.
