I don’t know how it is now, but in the not too distant past very few writers saw very much of the money their paintings would eventually earn. I think Monet made a lot of money off his paintings during his lifetime, but I think he was the only one from that era who did that. Van Gogh only sold one of his paintings during his lifetime. His paintings now sell for millions of dollars, but Van Gogh spent his life in abject poverty. Some of what is passing for art these days is ridiculous. I wouldn’t want my name associated with that no matter how much money I made.
