I took too many aps and other meds in the past. Am i damaged?

So I think that I tried around 10 or 11 aps. Some of them made me crazier. Some of them had unbearable side effects. Even the last doc said(even though that they don’t like to admit it) that they gave me too many aps for the last 7 years in the hospitals… Since my diagnosis I had also some benzos and since forever I was on Depakote. Now the doc says that I respond the best to the Zyprexa and I am on it since 2 years. I am in quite bad shape still but probably its some other symptoms that I have than schizophrenia cause Zyprexa should have helped till now.
But am I damaged by so many aps? Isnt it 10 aps for 8 years a bit too much?
or maybe my ‘‘zombie-stoned’’ look is more from my depression idk?..
Hugs to all

Yes, I know that it was too many meds. But why do they do this to us? is it just a thing of trial and error? Am I the only one here who tried so many aps? But yes, when I landed in the hospital, I looked very sick and I almost didn’t talk so they didn’t know exactly what to do with me  … its not even the docs fault I guess…

Hello. Have you tried clozopine? This is the go to medication when all else fails. I am studying mental health in college and I believe you need to have failed with 3 AP before they prescribe it.

I’ve taken about a dozen APs since my diagnosis. I don’t think I’m damaged.

No, taking many APs consecutively (one, then another) is not going to damage you any more than taking the same one for 10 years, because they all have a similar mechanism. There are, obviously, some differences between them, somewhat different side effects etc. So switching to avoid the worst side effects is actually a good thing.

Now if you took 10 APs at the same time for 10 years yes, I would guess that would damage you.

Probably most of this is a combination of the disease and a sedentary, isolated lifestyle. I know you didn’t choose that. But if you begin some light physical activity, you may find some of the issues you are experiencing improve.

Now that zyprexa helping you can stay on that and that’s a good thing.

No, you’re not the only one who tried this many aps.

I’ve been on 11 different APs in ten years, Anna1. Sometimes I’ve been seriously over-medicated. I was given mood stabilizers too which I may have never needed. I’ve had terrible side effects as well and the docs and mental health pros did nothing. It should have been obvious to them that I had side effects especially akathesia. They should have done something to help the severe suffering I was going through. Sorry about the rant, but it was a serious problem and something should have been done to stop it. I think it is a lot about trial and error. I hope you feel better soon. In time, you truly may.

Hugs

I’d like to also note, I made sure my mental health team are more aware of it and now they seem very attentive and mindful of it.

Sometimes I wonder if taking anti psychotics (along with a cocktail of other medications) at a young age effected my mental health.

Like maybe being on so many pills when my brain was still developing some how damaged it. Made things worse.

My mental illness has progressively gotten worse as I’ve gotten older but I guess that’s how it usually works.

Princess, me too i got worse with the age. So this is bad in itself for the illness, yeah…but more and more i think, i see that my illness was since kid :disappointed_relieved:. And its heavy… Idk if its strange to be mi since kid, i guess not, isnt it? Maybe the docs cant help us on everything too, yeah…

I read that brain shrinkage is a result of psychotic episodes, and not from antipsychotics, so you can take some comfort in that.
