Those sacrifices to the gods you talk about shows how abject the terror of humanity is over the unpredictable and the unknowable - the fear of things like drought, hurricanes, volcanoes, and sunamies. They say there are no atheists in foxholes, and I’ll admit that, in spite of my skepticism about God, if I was being shot at in a foxhole I would probably be praying faster and harder than anyone. But do to the comfort and security of modern life, I have the luxury of being objective. I don’t think most religions can withstand an objective study of their precepts.

the problem with believing that part of your god’s divinity abides in your fellow believers is that the natural conclusion is to adore one another. this leads to isolation from non-believers who don’t adore you for being a divine vessel or what have you. should l mention Waco on here? probably not.
