I have been living in Thailand for four years. I taught English at a government school for a year. For the past 2 years or so I have been making my living by teaching online. I recently lost my main job. There must be other ways I can come up with the $800 a month I need to survive over here.
I am American. I can’t receive disability living in a foreign country because I never paid into the system enough. See I have been sick since 23 and have always worked odd jobs, etc…
I got disability living in the states for a while when I really wasn’t doing well
How have you been able to stay that long? You can’t get a retirement visa until you are 50 and you have to already have an income of like $2000 per month or a lot of money in the bank to even get one.
I was thinking of retiring there but I am only 48 so I have to wait until 50 to apply for a visa. I could live like a king there.
I’ve had every kind of visa. I have had a work visa, because I taught English here legally. I also have had an education visa. You can do visa runs and get unlimited tourist visas from the embassy in Laos. I can also get multiple entry tourist visas only when I go back home to the states…
Yes, you could live very well over here on 2000 a month. I only spend about $500 a month currently.
I know a tourist visa is.only good for about 6 months and you have to leave and come back.
I tried getting hired on with the embassy when I got out of the Marines. I have three retirement checks. Each one of them is more than $2000 a month. I could live like a king there.
most tourist visas are good for 3 months. I have a multiple entry tourist visa that you can get in the states only. It is good for potentially 9 months but you have to leave the country every 60 days and come back.
I live in a neighboring country and I think English teacher is a good occupation in non-native English speaking countries.
I wish I could hire a native speaker to teach me American accent, but I have given up this idea.
I am not exactly sure about Thailand, but see121 has good suggestion for you- translator or tour guide.
I enjoy teaching Korean’s the most, they are the most polite and most fun. I’ve taught Chinese and Japanese as well. So I’m going to look for more schools based in Korea.
