I hate driving in the city

So many cars, so many distractions, so many people. But I have to get used to it.

I am a poor driver and I don’t dare drive in China, because the people who ride scooters here have no sense of road safety and often ride on red lights. Really unruly people.

I like driving when other people are still asleep-but not at the wheel.

I ace driving in the city. The frustrating part is when the roads all turn to one-ways and there are people parked all over the place. Finding street parking is always fun. I grew up driving in DC, and it’s kill or be killed practically. No one drives, they just aim their cars, and screw anyone in their way. They will do what I call a “New York stop,” and that is where you pull out in a street far enough to cause people in the oncoming lane to stop so you can cross. A good way to get broadsided but no one cares. Tailgaters are my pet peeve though.

I am quite far from any metropolitan cities and so the traffic here is quite peaceful. I do not have a car and so I ride my bike or I take a local bus. When I lived in my auto in the US I got familiar with the traffic in many large cities such as LA, Atlanta and elsewhere. I think it is better now, meaning my bicycle riding.

I cancelled my license because I’m not getting a car anytime soon. We have a good transit system in this city and I live close to everywhere I need to go regularly. I have one year and a half left to re-issue my permit so I will do that when I move out next July, because here the mail gets delivered for everybody in the building and I’m afraid of it being lost in the shuffle.

I’m far from owning a car though, so far I do not mind. Would be helpful if I had kids to drive around.
