the proponents of anti-psychiatry are similar to the anti-covid anti-mask proponents and the anti-vaxxers. According to this new book, they have infiltrated the UN who advocate against involuntary treatment, committal and even not guilty by reason of insanity. This new book goes through all of their beliefs and refutes them based on evidence in medicine and neuroscience. Called Anti-Psychiatry and the UN Assault on the Mentally Ill, the book is available in print and ebook versions where books are sold.
Those are positions a moderate person could hold.
I wouldn’t lump them in with anti-vaxxers or anti-maskers. I am pro vaccine and pro mask but I’m against the committal to an institution unless the person is a PROVEN danger or the person wants to be committed. I value my freedom and I don’t want to be subject to the whims of some “expert”, I almost was committed against my will but my mom said no to that then I got a new psychiatrist that didn’t do that. Experts are wrong all the time. Before they are an expert they are a person, and no person is perfect or knows everything. I was also never told about all the possible side effects of the medications I was put on. They just told me I would feel better and that was all. I have some beefs with the psychiatric system, although it is not all bad.
I find pointing and laughing easier.
I would want myself to be forcefully committed if a medical dr thought I was at high risk of harming others or myself. Involuntary committal is only used when there is a threat in the very short term, i.e. when the patient is so agitated that there is an imminent threat of harm. In my opinion it is absolutely appropriate in this case.
That may be controversial, but I think everyone can agree that there are good psychiatrists and absolutely terrible ones and that there is no way that a psychiatrist should have more power than the police. They act as agents of social control and require no evidence to detain or forcefully drug people. Forced “treatment” fits the definition of torture and harm therefore it is.
They are not similar at all !
Having an illness backed by scientific facts whilst ignoring them is plain stupidity. Its very different.
People love to have a go at anything and theres no better industry to try destroy than psychiatry as to the lack of any real evidence, its easy picking !
Well a fair point of some antipsychiatry folks is that the explosion of brain research over the last decades has had surprisingly little influence on treatment of sz
