So I guess that means we usually resign in stressful situations instead of “fight”
Badly. Very badly…
Under just a little bit of stress I unravel quickly
I cannot handle stress whatsoever!
In my case- BADLY. I think it’s a mix of autistic meltdown and schizophrenic decompensation.I become more anxious, more paranoid, more verbally heated, cognition declines, fearful. To the average, not particularly intelligent mental health professional, it can appear like a tantrum, but it’s something I have no control over when it happens.
The importance of avoiding stressful situations cannot be overstressed (pun intended).
Interesting. I asked Microsoft Copilot a.i. and it said:
People with schizophrenia often have a different response to stress compared to those without the condition. Stress can exacerbate symptoms and may even trigger episodes of psychosis in individuals who are already vulnerable¹². Here are some key points about how stress affects people with schizophrenia:
-
Increased Sensitivity: Individuals with schizophrenia tend to be more sensitive to stress. Even minor stressors that might not affect others significantly can lead to heightened anxiety and symptoms².
-
Disrupted Stress Response: Research indicates that the stress response system in people with schizophrenia is often disrupted. For example, the typical increase in cortisol (a stress hormone) and dopamine (a neurotransmitter) seen in response to stress does not occur in the same way in people with schizophrenia⁴⁶.
-
Potential Triggers: Stressful life events, such as changes in work or home life, relationship difficulties, or financial problems, can trigger or worsen symptoms of schizophrenia².
-
Coping Strategies: Managing stress is crucial for individuals with schizophrenia. Techniques such as mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and structured routines can help mitigate the impact of stress³.
Understanding these differences can help in developing better support and treatment strategies for those living with schizophrenia. If you have any more questions or need further information, feel free to ask!

Oh, I can relate to increased stress response and negative coping strategies. I’m usually calm but it takes next to nothing to stress me out, and I often cope by getting angry or getting brain fog so it’s even more difficult to manage the stress.
Next week i am going to have tested my cortisone system, there might be something wrong with my adrenal gland (im chronically low on sodium and it might be linked to level of cortisol and the adrenal gland somehow)
Stress triggers insomnia and exacerbates my voice hallucinating
When I’m under stress, my voices get worse. The link is clear. I need a very low stress life.
Stress can really affect people with schizophrenia, often making their symptoms worse and I can guarantee that since my bestfriend has schizophrenia. They might get more anxious or paranoid, and sometimes even have trouble keeping their thoughts together. I’ve seen that in situations where they’re under a lot of stress, it’s helpful to keep things calm and give them some space, or just be there to listen. It’s all about creating an environment where they can feel more at ease, which can make a big difference in how they handle things.
Patients with schizophrenia also demonstrate an impaired ability to adapt to stress, showing decreased norepinephrine and andrenocorticotropin responses to physical stress (Kudoh et al., 1999) and blunted cortisol responses to psychosocial stressors (Jansen et al., 1998) compared to healthy volunteers.
So there’s something wrong with our fight flight ability?
I can’t work because I get stressed easily because I can’t work
vicious cycle
It depend on my sleep.
And it’s getting better with age.
Some things you can’t change, some things you can change.
The things you can change you are obligated to change.
The things you cannot change may be unchangeable.
If it’s you that’s unchangeable you are perhaps more able to change things.
So it’s on you to change things or not.
If it makes sense
And the weather.
Shouting, destroying, writing, working
I think schizophrenia creates the conditions for which a stress response takes place, but personality types and hormones create the most likely response, not the conditions.
Examples of what I mean:
- Some personalities hate confrontation, while others thrive on it.
- It is hard to have a anger response when you are tired and sleepy.
That said, schizophrenia can mess with memory allocation, which can dramatically alter our responses just like PTSD. With stress being a memory trigger it could affect our response, especially under the abnormal conditions schizophrenia brings about.
Inability to cope with stress is one of the main reasons I can’t work
