I aced math till grade 11 or senior. My mind was already becoming a bit loose and I moved over to English and science. Just for the record. I think my deterioration with my math mind was highly indicative of future problems…Anyone else good at math and lost that through puberty ? I’m curious to know??
I was fairly average at algebra, but abysmal at geometry.
Hi, @rogueone! I was the best at my class in algebra till puberty yeap. My mind was very fast on the equations etc… I lost all this now. I even cant think and calculate simple money or additions… I am insecure now of calculations…
Yeah, its like this sometimes in this illness .
Ironically I was the opposite. I was terrible at math, until after I got sick. I don’t think that correlation equals causation, though. I think it has more to do with me finally having a good professor. All of my math teachers were terrible, which led me to not liking the subject.
I found math pretty easy to complete. I just needed it to be explained in depth. A good teacher was needed.
Everyone should know algebra in my opinion. It is useful and basic. Calculus not somuch… my brother struggled with algebra did well in geometry. He has a learning disability. I think there should be exceptions for people like him who want to do trade school stuff like plumbing or have learning disabilities like extra or substantial help.
Is algebra 1 a requirement? Some folks are just not good at math but excel in other areas. I was good at math though.
@insidemind. Geometry is more visual than Algebra. Maybe that’s why your bro did better.
Apart from geometry I was a little above average at math , compared to other students in general . I was nowhere near being a mathematical genius though.
Truth be told I’ve not had a reason to use algebra for many years. I’m not even sure I’ve retained much knowledge about in the 46 years since I did math.
It is more about thinking skills, logic, critical thinking than application. My brother has a learning disability. Not sure what. Some strange one…
Stuff like d=rĂ—t is important and basic.
I didn’t read the article. I might later. But I struggled more in geometry than algebra. Algebra was a cake for me. I failed geometry in high school and got a C the second time. Ended up majoring in math years later and dropped out due to schizophrenia at a top university in the world…Anyways, I think math is very important. Some say it’s easy and you don’t have to be a genius. It’s like learning an instrument. It takes time and dedication. I can’t play music for ■■■■, but I probably could learn some if I put in the effort and tried. Same with math, I guess. But it’s exponentially hard for some people like those with dyslexia or dyscalculia – especially these folks who get confused over symbols and symbol manipulation.
I say focus on stuff you are good at, that you like, and you can make money. My brother is a sound technician/engineer. He has a business. He’s starting slow and barely makes any money, but more money than I ever made in a year or probably in a lifetime because I barely worked at all.
Tom Cruz and Bella Thorne have dyslexia. They are geniuses int heir own ways and are millionaires and famous. So don’t let a learning disability or lack of high school education get you down. Just get a GED or study your ass off. I slept through high school mostly.
I had a blast with algebra and physics. I didn’t care much for chemistry though. Basically I feel a person needs to learn how to learn imho.
Yes. Learning how to learn is key.
