Do you think they could make some kind of super rugged drone that you could fly over a tornado cloud and have camaras aboard that could take film in real time from the top of a funnel cloud, and then, after it has done that for a while, descend into the funnel? That would be a mighty tall order, but maybe you could pull it off. You could probably get useful information about tornados in general, and it is also something the public might like to see. It would have to be a mighty rugged drone to keep from being torn apart in the funnel, though.
i imagine they’d have made some sort of device that can survive a tornado by now. Not so much a drone but just like a gps device wrapped in protection to track and learn about tornados. You wouldn’t necessarily need a video of visible light as you could use other forms of observation to measure things about tornadoes. im gonna research a bit about it now
yea so apparently there is something called a Tornado “turtle”
"
Turtles
Designed in part by storm chaser Tim Samaras, “turtles” are small devices filled with instruments that measure humidity, pressure, temperature and wind speed/direction. Storm chasers must spend time finding the right conditions for tornadoes to develop and then put themselves in the line of fire in order to deploy a turtle. The storm chaser must place the turtle in the path of an approaching tornado, while leaving enough time to escape. Samaras has successfully placed numerous turtles, and the information collected from the devices will be used to help forecasters make more precise predictions about tornadoes.
That would be cool, @crimby.
Lots of potential for scientific research and some cool footage, as well.
The directional path of a tornado is extremely unpredictable. Drones like helicopters are susceptible to turbulence and changes in the air by high speed winds. There currently is no live recorded footage of a funnel cloud that has been captured and posted on YouTube that I know of. This may be due to the fact that citizens living under a tornado threat warning are more concerned about their safety than recording the tornado itself.
I know this is a scheme better thought about than actually pulled off, but it can be fun to speculate - about the tornado warning - I’ve been through more tornado warnings than I can count, but never a real tornado. Nevertheless, any time there is a tornado warning I go to the best shelter I can find. Most of the people where I live don’t bother to seek shelter in the event of a tornado warning.
