What about the beats
I hadn’t thought before about how much talent it takes for a rapper to just spontaneously spout rhyming lines into a mic. It’s a wonder of prophetic power to be able to do such a thing. I had always passed rap off as crap – but a convenience store clerk made me think about it differently today. She had M&M playing on their hi-fi and I asked her if she liked it. Deb said it was amazing how he does what he does… so I came away impressed.
I really loved asaps stuff coming out of harlem before he became popular, not because it was complex but because it was different to stuff which had come out of the east coast before in terms of production. With a bit of a houston influence to it and less focus on lyrical complexity, with more focus on being fresh and unusual. I love the juxtaposition of asap’s immature voice on Get Lit with the droning low pitched vocals. These guys were young, trying all sorts of different things to get noticed while at the same time trying to create something never heard before, and also just creating music which tried to represent the haziness of intoxication.
If only these guys had stuck to their guns and kept making unique stuff, I liked these guys long before they got famous and sort of started producing music people wanted to hear.
While Schoolboy Q set out to produce a stereotypical “this is my hood” rap with Figg get da money, I loved this track for its imagery more than anything, and he was obviously influenced by Nas with the content choice, but I love Q’s agressive voice and unique delivery on this track as well as just being able to sit back and listen and relax. Its not just about hip hop culture, more about Q as a person, who I grew to love and admire. I have no idea where the beat sample which loops throughout came from, but Black Hippy tended to choose great samples back then. I also like the disorganization of the storytelling here.
On the conscious end of things, Kendrick Lamar was and always has tried to be a prophet. Songs like these got me into rap around age 15 or so.
The sounds on graduation were otherworldly, this song in particular changed my life.
M&M? Eminem? Lol
