High functioning schizophrenia

I guess it is a rare species and a rare sight. We should all try to achieve high functioning status but also be content if we cannot.

I’m high function as I go to college full time and work on the weekends. I want to live independently but I’ve got to get my anxiety under control before that happens. I think we do exist but I think we are just the luckiest of very unlucky people.

So you would say getting a huge amount of support doesn’t necessarily negate one being high functioning ? Ie it’s where you are at irrespective of the level of support you get that counts most.

Good point I guess I would say it’s your performance that matters - but maybe that’s wrong?

It’s a valid POV though I’m not sure everyone would agree. I know there’s talk of independence when discussing such issues , but is it really such a black and white thing? Is anyone ,whether ill or not , ever completely independent as in not reliant in any way at all on other people? Perhaps it’s about where you are in terms of shades of grey rather than black(non-independent) vs white(completely independent) .

Definitely shades of grey…

@anon78876561 Same here i run my own business and most people wouldn’t think in million years i had Paranoid SZ tbh

That’s a great way to put it @Air.

I think there would be a lot of high functioning schizophrenics, if ignorant people weren’t so prejudiced against it, and causing problems they keep people from functioning properly.

I agree. We need just a little more compassion

From *20-40 milions sz around the globe around *2-3milions are hf. That’s a statistic, a good one. Autism contrary to the pop gen belif is the most diabiliting mentall illness not sz

Not to take in consideration mentall deficits

Autism isn’t normally considered a mental illness, but a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Yes you’re right. My bad

As my report says about Asperger’s syndrome - ‘A pervasive developmental disorder’ which I guess is what you are saying minus the ‘neuro’ bit. .

I’d question whether autism is more disabling, but am open to being proved wrong.

It really depends on how serious it is. It can be a lot milder (especially if you include Asperger’s) and a lot more serious. I don’t really know how serious the ‘average’ autism is, either.

“Neurodevelopmental disorder” and “developmental disorder” are basically the same, and often used interchangeably.

My daughter has autism and is on the lower end, sometimes mid. She’d never be able to even post, so yes, it can be much worse.

I would say mine is quite mild ie ASD level 1 in DSM 5 terms .My ADOS 2 scores were social communication 3(which meets the autism cut off) and social interaction 5 (autism cut off is 6) It’s the additional things that have an added negative effect on functioning.

Since schizophrenia and autism are now both on spectrums, can you be diagnosed with both disorders (overlapping symptoms)?

Were they ever excluded in the criteria of either in DSM IV? I thought they were just normal differential diagnoses.

This is complicated:
