Dad did not know his own tender heart - thinking it wasn’t macho to care about the kill and eat cycle. He’s been gone many years now but I am just beginning to realize that he really did like what his heart demanded in later years - less animal foods and fewer demands to “clean up your plate” .

Sorry, but your title makes me think of a dog slowly eating those big hard chunks of dogfood one by one, while looking up with a mournful eye.
